There are a lot of sub placement guides on the internet - search them up and try them out. For me it ended up being a compromise between best sound, free space and cable length.

I'm still haven't sorted out my 7.1. Bought speaker 6 & 7 about 6 months ago and they are still sitting in the box. Still need to invest in a 7.1 receiver but since 99% of the media I watch is still 5.1 or less (either MySkyHD or downloaded 720p 5.1 rips) I'm not in any hurry.

For ultra low frequencies your sub almost needs to be in the next room. When my system is up and running, you can hear the sub better from the street than in the lounge.

mikeey01 is the expert on here, ask him.

A good trick with the sub is to place it in your typical seating position (on the floor), then walk around the room to see where it sounds best. That is where the sub should go.
