Short answer is when it doesn't fit properly anymore.
Some wear them every day, others only on a Sunday.... So saying 5 years is as hit and miss as knowing the history of a second hand one!
If it feels loose, head to the shop to try on a new one to feel the difference.
My last one was WAY over due for replacement.
Looking back, i really should have replaced it earlier than I did.
The replacement cost isn't high... 18 months licence fee for a near top of the line Shoei...

Other than a major drop or in an accident, there really isn't any rule that I'm aware of. They all stretch, so you may need to re-pad it, but helmets can last for years if you look after them properly
You only bought this helmet as the nice policeman in Australia told you to spend the $200 fine in Australia......................
wHEN YOU DROP IT OR CRASH IN IT I would have thought![]()
