Just upgraded - From crank to nuclear fission in one easy step!

Back in oh, 1998 or 1999 I got an Intel Pentium 2, 400mHz! Man, what a machine, I could run anything, play anything - do anything! It came with an 8GB HDD (OMG, I'll NEVER use all of that!!!) and 128MB of RAM.

It dawned on me lately that waiting almost 4 minutes for the computer to boot up, and 30 seconds for internet explorer to load is rather annoying. So, through rather convenient family contacts I got myself a free Pentium 4. Man what a difference. Boot up in 40 seconds, explorer loads in about 1 second.....ahh, it may seem normal to you, but to me it is luxury! (back in MY day...)

The only thing I don't have is a good video card, but since I don't play games it's not much of an issue.

If anyone needs it, I have a spare crank available. It was the add-on to the P2, which you turn by hand to give a few extra volts/mHz when times got rough... Bolts right into the side of the tower

Get yourself an Apple Mac with the latest OS. Loads up and runs in about 15 seconds.

If all else fails - dump IE and switch to Firefox.

Indeed - never mind loading up, instant wake-up from sleep = no restarts except for software updates! Hurrah!

Dunno about Firefox on a Windoze machine, but Firefox is hellishly greedy on system resources on my Powerbook - Processor is at this moment running at about 80-90% using FF, but drops ~70% on quitting. [Using it currently, as Apple's last 10.3.9 update broke Safari - still broken after all Apples 'helpful' solutions.] That said, it's a pretty good browser - I can put up with a HOT powerbook case in the colder months...

I must say that my Mum's '99 iMac has no problems whatsoever - Macs have L O N G lives compared to Windoze boxes - and the price differential has largely disappeared!

At the end of the day it's preference - PC boxes aren't bad per se [especially if running a non windoze OS], but Windoze always wants me to clap for its 'cleverness' [makes me ]- My mac just does what it has to without fuss.

    My $0.02.

OMG , you used that word! (explorer).
Swtich to Firefox and get yourself a free software based firewall if you don't have a hardware one.

Big congrats on the free upgrade!

Hmmph! Well I have a computer. With stuff.

    It works.

    Sometimes it works slow.

    Sometimes it stops.

    Then it doesn't work.

I have to switch it off.

If I had a bike or car that bad I'd shoot the sorry mofo.

I like Windows, running XP now. It has a firewall, but I have another software one installed. No problems.
