    God bless the IRD.

So, I get a $150 bill from the IRD, stating they want their money and that if payment is not immediate then they will apply interest daily and apply penaties.

I ignore it, Simple fact is I need my fucking money more then that pack of fucks.

Anyway, a few more letters and demands follow, I finally get the stone out of its hiding place, squeeze some blood out of it and instead of my poor children getting to eat for a week I sent in the money.

Today I get a letter from the accountant for where I once worked, Good news, The sums had been done, IRD owe me $93 and the money will be issued on the 23rd July.

    Fuck me dead.

Now how the fuck do I get my $150 off the thieving useless fuckers.

Depends if it is the same kind of tax, and if it is from the same period. The $93 refund may already be taking into account the $150 you paid.

Best way is to simply ring them.

Ahh yes the John Galt solution. One I will be doing myself in the New Year. About time I had a summer off.

In that case I might as well let them keep it, and just drag myself out the back and administer a couple self-uppercuts.

Never managed to get sense out of them on the phone yet, every person you talk to contradicts the last person, None of the amendments they supposedly make ever materialize or can be found again, and no matter what you think is sorted, The next letter is contradictory to everything discussed and in some cases so different that you're just fucked.

And every time I have paid an accountant to look into it, The sums from IRD have never ever stacked up.

The best thing to do would be to line em all up against a wall and shoot the bastards.

I got a similar letter, only I owed over 6k thanks to a previous employer calculating my tax wrong........ Fortunately I pleaded poverty and showed that I was broke and they wrote it off...... don't even have to pay it back.....

They did keep my wifes tax refund of $300 though, but hey, thats ok, good deal this time. Thanks IRD, you're awesome.

Nice. I had my previous employer stuff up my final pay - got a bill for $800 two years later.

Fuck that. Tell them you want it immediately otherwise you'll be charging interest.

You can ask for an assessment to be sent out to you. It outlines your tax account for the last 7 years and shows income earned, tax paid and refund or tax due each year. It will show you where / how the $150 is (if at all) offset against the refund due to get the $93 credit balance.

The IRD is currently charging about 8% p.a (non compounding) in interest charges. I owed a bit of tax and forgot to pay it (reminder got lost since IRD sent to the wrong address - not the one I completed the IR3 for!!!)

Anyway - I argued I shouldn't pay the $126 in late penalties. They said "stump up what you owe including penalties then write in asking for a credit due to our mistake". I did so, but have yet to receive a letter or refund.... Maybe my letter got lost in return.

Hmmm, recall last year having a bill for $215 due Feb 2010,had used a tax company to see if refund due, thought at November I'd better suss out bill,so rang IRD,lady did say yep will send out an account,we shifted, but I said my phone numbers same etc, email same, they said no worries will send account to you, after I'd rung in December, promptly forgot,so rang in June, oops you have arrears to pay, seems my taxrefund forgot to forward my account as I'd omitted to advise my change of address to them. So arrange payment etc, while there I asked about my student loan, had $800plus in credit, lady said no worries it will transfer when we get bill from studylink,so all ok.

Today get my IR3? and have refund woohoo, organise online details for direct credit due in 4 working days, also get my student loan summary, have a credit of $800 plus for 09/10 yrs,and about $300 for this year, they said I can get this amount($800 plus)paid back,on provisso that my account wil be in debit next year,as my loan was $1700 or so I am going to ask for money back, and by next 31 March will have about $1200 in credit at my present rate of payback, what annoyed me is when I found a credit and speaking to a lady from IRD about my credit, she categorically said it is payable when studylink invoices IRD,fair enough I thought, but according to my student loan statement it states I can have credited to me my amount paid from 09-10 year as technically it is mine,so roll on Monday and see if it is true.

Last year they sent me a letter saying I owed $100. Two days later they sent me a letter saying they owed me $150. Who to beleive?

Better than that though. I recently got a ticket for very unreasonably towing a trailer at 98kph on a 10km straight stretch of state highway. Oh well, only $30. Sent them a cheque (that they banked). A month later they send me a final notice, says on the bottom to ignore if you have already paid, so ignored. A month after that I get a letter saying they are taking it directly out of my wages. WTF i already paid it!. So they took it out of my pay. All over? No way... That was a month ago, today I have got a " Final Notice" for my overdue fine. That has already been paid twice.
Who do they have managing these systems?
There is no dark side of the moon, really, as a matter of fact. Its all dark...

    Never never never phone them.

ALWAYS write or email. You will need the paper trail later.
