Well looks like im going to have to SIT this one out... literally

I had a bit of an off on the yz250 and have torn my knee ligaments, real disappointed ill miss this year, Ever since i rolled into the petone club just under a year ago with just over 1100 ks on the clock after spending the last 12 hours behind ajturbo and fish taking "short cuts" ive been hanging out for next weekend.

it was the best riding day i have ever had

o well there will always be next year.....

last year i was really worried i wouldn't be ride fit enough, i spent the two weekends before just building up some time in the saddle and then had planned a 700k day with Eugene that was cut short by around 650ks after a fishtail in the wet that i still cant believe he managed to hang onto

anyway about 500ks into the day the grin on my face said id finish and as we pulled into the petone club about 730pm my heart sank and i almost wanted to turn around and go again...my arse however said something else and here we are a year later and im going to have to pull out

If your reading this and contemplating shall i give it a go, hell yes you will have a ball and the full support from your fellow bikers.

Me well the knee will heal and im already thinking about next year

all the best guys and girls enjoy the day have great one

    Hey John

I might be doing this on a different bike, but i'll leave that as a surprise when i turn up hehe. Prepare to be owned by a very unlikely tourer

You must have been reading our minds John. I was just chatting with Mark, Monie, Meanie & Yod at the Four Points prize giving (Yod will be paying for all our fuel on Saturday) and we (The Palmy Mob) will be departing BP Rangetiki at 5am so any others from the area that want to start with us are most welcome.

    See you at around 7...

Arrow Road conditions and error in HB directions

Over the last two days I have been on parts of the route.
There are two things to be aware of:

    1. Road conditions - There are some dodgy parts of the Pongaroa - Porangahau road: About 5 slumps / wash-outs which have warning signs or cones but with the wet conditions forecast and if you are going fast you are likely to come off - some large bumps in the bitumen. There is also a section of this road that is one-lane so stay left and beware of blind curves and hill crests. Watch out for turkeys - big ones - that live near the road before Alfredton.

The Pemberton to SH1 road has sheep and bulls wandering around. The bulls seemed dozy and docile but never trust sheep - they stupidly will dart out right in front of any vehicle. This section is also more narrow and twisty.

I think John already has warnings about these areas in the information he has emailed... I am simply highlighting them as (from what I have been told) some riders treat the C1K as a race and there probably will be some inexperienced riders - in both cases there is the possibility of an accident. Ride sensibly and to the conditions and you will be OK.

Personally I found parts of the Pongaroa - Porangahau road "not fun" at all, having to be extra careful for crappy road surfaces, debris and narrow roads. Other areas of road were a joy, with magnificent, beautiful views - also in the H's Bay along Middle Road.

    2. I believe there is a minor error in the directions in H's Bay, Mutiny Road. Not major but could be confusing. I am sending this through to John and he will email all registered riders with the correction or clarification.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.
Some of the ride will be wet and cold but no doubt we will all have a good time.

[Edit] The maps are wrong. See my post #86 below. Mutiny Road does not go through to Te Aute Rd - it has been blocked off at Stock Rd. No problem though - all riders will figure it out because there is no other choice but to take Stock Rd.

John's information is correct. My confusion is that Te Aute Trust Rd appears about 10 km before Mutiny Rd. For some reason I thought that Mutiny Rd ended on Stock Road as a T intersection but it in fact ends at Te Aute Rd.

Thumbs up Mutiny Rd T intersections with Stock Rd, not Te Aute Rd.

Ahhhh, I think you may want to follow me! Have a look at the photo below - from Google Street View. Mutiny Rd does in fact T intersection with Stock Rd. Mutiny Rd does not go through to Te Aute Rd. No big deal though because anyone riding along Mutiny Rd following John's directions will find that Stock Rd is the only choice.

Keep in mind that you will see Te Aute Trust Road about 10 km before you get to Mutiny Rd.

Although it takes you further [edit] east, not towards Wairoa.
But yes, it would probably be more interesting and Havelock North in itself is worth a stop if you are not in a hurry.
