In these wonderous days of instant comms it seems to me that a computer geek has an opportunity to earn some serious dosh.

Let's say, for a dollar a week one could be the recipient of texts or emails which fingered the position of the opposition, Check-point at the intersection of.... Nasty with away radar parked at..... Mobile camera parked at.....

The recipients of this service would also be the eyes. TXT 9876 with details.

Details received, geek uploads repeat TXT to all those who subscribe for a particular area/region.

The service would not have to be limited to we bikers. Anyone driving anything anywhere would be a prime customer.

A basic area...like Auckland, from Albany to Pukekohe might be a buck a week. You want the Waikato too? That's an extra fifty cents, and so on.

If only we could all think outside the square, as they us more and more technology to in-trap why shouldn't those that chose to also take advantage of the same technology.
How can I support such an idea - simply I am more concerned with the driver who doesn't have the ability to focus on the task at hand nor the competency to drive well and fast, than the person who is totally aware of their surroundings and perhaps pushes the limit a little.

So how am I meant to make money from this?

You employ a team of 150 nationwide, provide them with vehicles and fuel, then pay them to travel every single road in the country constantly, while doing so they take note of the location of every single cop and speed monitoring device. They would need to keep driving to check all other possible locations so each vehicle would need to have a GPS system that could upload the data back to the central database that then sends it out to each subscriber.

I'm guess a few million to set up, Each text sent is 12cents cost to the company, charge your subscribers $1 each a week, You should be filthy rich in no time at all.

OP is saying the subscribers also provide the information. sounds good in theory, but someone has to pay for all those texts.

On a tangent, if someone wants to pay $1 a text, I'll gladly send "Don't Speed" to their cellphone

What a silly idea.

Traffic police change their location often. By the time the info got out to the recipients, it would be out of date. From that point of view, the police would love such a scheme - sit at a location for 20 minutes, then they're assured that the grapevine will keep speeds low at that location for hours afterwards.

Secondly, the use of cell-phones while driving - particularly texting - is very much illegal. It is all but impossible on a bike, and creates hazards for bikers when done by car drivers. How on earth are you going to send or receive updates in a timely manner?

So are you going to actually pursue your "business opportunity" yourself...?

Already a service, not a text message but an iphone app. It's called "trapster" and it overlays on your GPS. It has a social networking aspect to it as users report locations of things like mobile police, check points, fixed cameras and such. The ones like check points and speed traps only last a day or two and when it warns you it tells you what time and day it was reported and by what user and how reliable their posts are.

It can do all sorts of smart things and you can even tell it how far from the reported trap you want to be warned. Flippin magic, this thing is almost worth the price of the iphone alone. I can even put it in my tank bag, see the alerts and report stuff cause the report button is huge. Its even saved me a few times.
