    Why do burnouts?

I didn't know where to post this question, but I am curious, dumb question maybe but
I don't see cruiser riders doing this and after seeing some burnout vids on our vids section...what is the purpose of a burnout, other than making alot of smelly burnt rubber smoke and a skid mark on the road? Is there some functionality to it in terms of tires sticking to the road more or something?

    and thats a perfect answer??

Have to admit i have no idea what the big buzz is either. don't particularly like spending money on tires as it is without burning them off in 2 minutes.

It removes flat spots from rear wheel lockups?

The only time some people can have somewhat controlled loss of traction on their bikes?

Good way to rark it before having a worn tyre replaced

    fun

I think it is as simple as you surmise - fun. I believe in actual drags they do it to get tyres warm and sticky and get some rubber on to track to make it sticky - but I suspect the drama of it is also a factor - got to please spectators.

I have too much mechanical sympathy to enjoy it - the revs and noise sounds like engine explode to me.

Erm...ya...that's exactly "why" I asked! To understand!!!

To the rest of you...THANK you for the explanations, I thought it has to do with speed or traction....but now I see its just for the same reason we do donuts on the parking lots here when we get a shit load of snow....just for fun!

Cruisers aren't really suited to burn outs, too much weight on the rear end.

Burn outs are fun though. Lots of smoke and noise ....
