Games to play in the car

For those that have young children you may find this amusing. Other may have already played this game but for me it's a new one, one that is slightly addictive.

    It's called "Spotle"

It's all in the number plate.....when you see and old style black with white writing numberplate it's a "spotle".

As these plates are not that common it's an interesting game. My children are loving it and it's making going out in the car that little bit more interesting.

    Spotle on a car - 1 point

    Spotle on a trailer - 2 points

    Spotle on a motorbike - 3 points

So far have only seen one motorbike in the last three weeks. They've started to work out that you only find them on older cars and they are harder to see in the dark.

    Very entertaining.

We played the A to Z of NZ towns, then countries of the world etc
Youngest to oldest A = Auckland, Ashburton, Albany, etc
    Then B words
    And so on.
Good for their general knowledge too...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

That's an awesome game!! I'll have to remember that one.
We used to play "Horse" where you spot a horse and first one to yell "Horse" gets a point..... my brother, sister and I knew where all the horses on SH2 between Gisborne and Wairoa lived!
We also played "Possum".... spot the road kill, 1 point for a possum, 1 point for a rabbit or hare, 1 point for a bird unless it was a hawk or something native like a Pukeko when it was 2 points and 5 for a dead cat/dog/horse/cow/sheep/human.
We also picked car colours..... whoever picked white would normally win, even when you disallowed cream.
Oh fun and games on road trips, now everyone has their own personal entertainment.

Geez, all my kids play is 'yellow car', first one to see it and yell it out gets to punch whoever they want.

Something I do on the long endurance rides to keep my mind active (and test how active and responsive it still is) is to take all the digits of an approaching plate and add together (also tests your reactions to get all the numbers, and remember). If it adds to more than 10, add those digits together, to eventually get a number between 1 and 9.

There its just pure interest to see which number occurs the most frequently. Then test how fast you can do it, and try to do as many cars as possible in a line.

When my son was about seven, not long after combination letter and numeral rego plates came out, he and I started a plate spotting notebook. We noted every letter combination down and we had to spot one example of each letter combo. So we need one AA ****, one AB **** plate etc etc all the way through to ZZ. We recorded each find in the notebook. The rules were we had to get the numerals, the make and colour of each car. This took a fair amount of time to complete. Before it was finished he had grown up, moved to Wales, got married and had two kids.

A couple of years ago, just as we moved to triple letter plates, I completed the book - I had carried it on for all those years. Once I had it complete, I sent it to him to remind him of the task we set out to complete all those years ago.

It took about thirty years, give or take a few. Longest bloody game I ever played...

Along with "I Spy" and a few other games there were a number of games you could play with number plates, also makes/models/colours. Looking for weird drivers, etc.

Now with just the two of us most of the time, it's harder to come up with things to do on long trips. Spotting personalised plates, nice cars, complaining about idiot drivers. After nearly 33 years of marriage, I'd be interested in some ideas for us "mature" folk!

Going in to the city two days this week (as a passenger in a car) I decided to play "spot the driver texting or talking on their cellphone". Conversation between work mates goes dry about Oteha Valley Road.

Very interesting results I must say

We play "Shut the hell up or you're getting a thick ear"

And " Settle the hell down or we are turning round and going back home, and when we get there you're going to your room for a month"

and " You leave your damn brother alone or when we get there you are staying in the car while the rest of us "insert applicable activity here"

    The kids love it.

    Goat, Boat, Float . . .

First to spot all three wins. Keep an eye out even for ones you've already ticked off, as if your first to spot another then you "block" the others from getting it.

A Float can a horse trailer or something that is actually floating. Try getting two at once; a boat on the water is both Boat and a Float. You can also spot the actual item, or a picture, or the word (ie; "Goat Road").

A boat that's afloat with a goat at the wheel; that, my friends, would be the Holy Grail.
