    Locating an elusive oil filter

Anyone know how to get to the oil filter on a 1996 honda 250 hornet??

Haven’t done it myself before and I can’t find the workshop manual.

    Cheers!

Hmmm, from memory some Honda's have their filter located behind a metal plate. If it is, it should be obvious, an engine cover with 2 bolts that looks like it should come off.

It can't be very far from the sump plug.

Get a torch and take a look.

Honda ones are usually on the side opposite the side stand. Look for a engine cover plate, possibly with 3 bolts holding it on. However it could really be anywhere.

I'm no 250 Hornet expert, but I believe the engine is the same as a CBR250RR, albeit slightly detuned - in which case it's a cartridge type filter located inside the sump (see diagram), held in by a big bolt (probably a 17 or 19mm hex).

I'm pretty sure that's where my one is.

Well there's the 17-18mm alan key hole on the oposite side of the sidestand which looks like it could be hiding an oil filter. And there's a big bolt under the engine as well.

    Flip a coin? haha

If the big bolt is in the middle of a round cast cover (about 80mm or so across) then that'll be it, see the below picture and imagine the filter being inside the sump (bottom of engine) and all you can see is the head of that big bolt and the outside of the cover. There's a few extra pics to hopefully give you an idea.

I just changed the oil filter today on my CBR. Turned out to be a much simpler job than the drama I was imagining.

mine was a fucking mission and a half... the oil filter was on so damn tight. some retard thought he was being sure of it... what a dick

but i reckon the bike feels a bit smoother now that it's done anyway.
