Superseded parts!

A while ago I bought a yamaha rs125. Needing new points and a condenser I went to ebay, however, the supposed replacement parts did not fit. To yamaha I went next with the OEM part numbers. Superseded I ordered the newer parts to find that they too did not fit the bike! Cheers to Red Baron for hunting around for suitable points, I still have a question about the condenser.

The wiper (?) thing attached to the condenser is in the wrong position. Apparently it's not really necessary. I thought I'd put it to kb before I plonk it in and forget about it. Necessary or not? What does it even do?

Firstly, it's weird that they would supercede a part with something that is not backwards compatible - maybe there is a whole replacement assembly that you can get? However secondly, you should realise that a condensor is a just a capacitor, it is connected across the points to help reduce the arcing when they open. The capacitor/condensor only has 2 electrical connections, one is the mounting plate that it screws to the engine with and the other will be a lead or terminal at one end of the cylindrical capacitor.

As long as the replacement part fits into the location without fouling anything and both ends of it are connected, it will work fine. You can run points with the condenser missing entirely, but you will be replacing points more often.

Condenser does not even have to be adjacent to the points - you could mount it next to the coil, as long as it is connected between ground and the lead going to the points.

FYI, condenser is there to prevent (or at least reduce) the arc between the points as they are opening - thus preventing the points burnng out .

The felt wiper should be lightly oiled to provide lubrication for the points cam - not really essential
