    Stupid nooby question time

    OK - I ended up getting the CG125 so I am underway! Now... you guys are going to get swamped by what will probably seem to you very dumb questions!! But I havent had a lot of mechanical experience and one of the appeals to me of all this was learning as I go and hopefully enjoying the fruits of my new found wisdom and efforts.

    There are lots of threads telling me what I need to do to the bike to muke it bucket worthy - but not "how" to do them. I am going to start in production class so I can leave the engine, exhaust and carb (apart from cleaning it) alone to start with.

    I have so far had great fun taking off bits like chain guard, front and rear fenders, lights, indicators and speedo cluster - bike looks better already. Then I got really carried away and took out the air box/filter and battery. So... question time

    1, How do I get rid of the ignition switch? There are 4 wires - 1 of which seems to go to lighting functions so I guess that is redundent - one goes to the earth, one to battery and the other seems to go to the condenser and flywheel generator - I presume I have to hardwire these somehow? So I dont need to use the key?

    2, Wiring up plugs, sump plug, oil filler plug - is this just a case of attaching some wire to each plug and securing the wire to the frame?

    3, Crash protection - where do you get the nylon crash thingys and how do you generally attach them?

    4, In production can I upgrade the front brake to a disc brake?

    5, Also in production can you use clip ons? and who suplies them?

    Think thats about it for now - sorry for being a dumb ass - but hey I am having fun!!

    GET A MANUAL! other than that numberboards and nylon everywhere use your imagintion (screwys bolts ss hoseclamps and wireties are all good options along with locking wire)scateboard wheels can be used to good affect weld a nut on somewhere and run a bolt and washer threw the wheel and into the nut

    Hi - Thanks, skateboard wheels, hadnt thought of that, have to talk nicely to a mate of mine that can weld.

    I have downloaded a manual, but again it shows me the wiring diagram which I can kind of follow - but it doesnt tell me how to take the key out of the circuit, (bypass it) other stuff in it is pretty good and well explained even for a mechanical noob like me

    1. Dunno. I'm a mechanical idiot too. Trial and error works well. Nothing wrong with keeping the ignition key. My bucket still has it's ignition switch and ket. Your ignition switch will either make or break a circuit when switched on. Warm your bike up so it's easy to start then pull the wires of and reconnect them until you find out wtah you need to run it. You've already identified one is to do with the lights that you won't be needing and another is to the battery that you have removed, so that only leaves two wires.
    2. Yep. Drill a hole thru the sump plug and wire it to something handy.
    3. Only needed for Kart tracks - not needed for real race tracks Ruapuna or Levels etc.
    4 & 5. Production Buckets must have standard engines, frames, exhaust, carburettors, airboxes, wheels and road tires. In any dispute regarding eligibility of machines, the series convenor's decision is final. TradeMe is your friend.

    The local bucket site is www.bmrc.co.nz which has the local rules and prep etc on it.

    Can you post a copy of the wiring diagram. Or PM me a copy, don't really want the entire manual. If so I'l have a look and let you know what you can get away with hacking out. Probably doesn't hurt to leave the ignition there to be honest, just tie the key to something so it doesn't fall out and get lost at some stage.

    Yeah I suppose I can leave it there - even if the battery isnt present it should still complete the circuit - just have to find somewhere to attach it as I have taken the housing (headlight, speedo etc ) off.

    The other helpfull guy said production bikes need standard airbox? I have removed it - so does that mean I have to refit it? Or is no airbox ok?

    I'd try
    1. Hard wire black and red together to get the system livened up
    2. Hook Green and Black/White up through a kill switch so you have some way of turning the thing off.

    Then kick it over with the plug out to see how things are going, you should be able to turn the spark on and off nicely. Try it with the plug out since if I'm wrong you may end up with a bike you can start but can't stop.

    As for the airbox, they run a different set of rules in Chch so if you leave it off you may find yourself kicked up into a class where that isn't nearly enough in the way of modifications to make you competitive, I'm not sure if they run the modified and stock bikes at the same time, if so no big deal, if not you may find yourself getting seriously demoralised and if the speed differences are big enough quite a hazard.

    Thanks for all that - its no biggy to put the airbox back in if I have to. I have pretty much pulled it to bits so will have to do a few other things before I can try your test theory out. I thought I might use an RCA plug as a kill swith so if I ever want to race on a street circuit (if I ever get that far!) I could tether it.

    Still; I am having fun and thats the main thing

    Don't worry about what class you will run in. We all race together anyway.
    No one is going to worry if it doesn't qiute fit any particular rule.
    Get it running and come and have some fun
