your getting confused with holden and general motors the holden brand doesnt exist outside aus and nz, the cruze (formally the daewoo lacetti) is a south korean market car rebadged as a cruze for australasia and as for the ford / holden thing i dont have any prejudices having owned lots of both brands, have had a xw falcon for 20 odd years and am considering a new v8 holden ute for work

No I'm not. GM is an international conglomerate that has a marketing strategy of using different marques in different markets. "Holdens" are sold outside Australia and New Zealand, predominantly as Chevrolets and Vauxhalls, but also as Buicks and Opels. Similarly "Opels" and "Daewoos" are sold as "Holdens" in Australia.

This demonstrates how GM's intellectual property, manufacturing and distribution is global. They are able to pick the most advantageous locations to design and manufacture vehicles. The Australian designed Cruze is made in Korea. It is sold in the USA as a Chevrolet. It has a German designed engine.

GM is a house of brands, compared with Ford which is a branded house. It's interesting to note that Australian Ford models like the Falcon aren't sold outside of Australia, New Zealand or outlying islands of either, particularly when compared with some Commodore models that are built in RH and LH drive configurations, badge engineered and then sold globally.

Not driven one, but the Cruze looks good on paper. 104Kw from an 1800 motor is pretty good.

If you expect it to perform like an SS Commodore because it's got a Holden badge, then you're bound to be disappointed - as well as stupid.

No not true at all.Falcon will continue as will the Commodore as there to far into the next model to call it quits,after that however who knows eh.New motor going into the Falcon sounds a goody as well.

Sadly the day will come i guess that all you can buy is front wheel drive 4 cylinder shitboxes bearing 5 star economy ratings.Tree huggers will love it i guess.Will enjoy next Sunday but in the back of ones mind you have to wonder how many more years we get to see it in this form.

My comment was aimed at those who agreed that it's gutless, which made me wonder what they actually expected from a budget 1800cc saloon.

The rumours of the eventual dropping of the Falcon have been circulating for years. Ford tried to tempt the Aussies with the Taurus, which was rejected quite soundly. But as Hitcher has pointed out, Ford's localised marketing strategy can't compete with the GM global approach. While there's been a few improvements in the power train of the Falcon, there's been only cosmetic body changes across the last three models (BA, BF, FG), fueling speculation that they're delaying the inevitable. Shame, but...

2014/15 there will be some changes for sure.Theres talk of Ford continuing the rear wheel drive thing using a common platform for both the Falcon and Mustang which doesnt sound silly considering the Falcons getting the Mustang motor.
