Pulled over for noise but have a wof. What's the deal?

As re title,if you get pulled over and the bloke has a word re the noise but your driving/riding with a current Wof whats the deal, wasnt on my bike but in my ute and when i said its got a wof blah blah i was told that the thing was simply to loud which to be honest i found a little strange,he pointed out the modified exhaust etc and even went to the trouble of getting underneath at the back to have a gander and commented that its nice work which it is,done properly etc and sounds nice but loudjesus no way,its got a nice rumble to it but compared to some of the Subarus etc the young fellas get around in its a quiet as a church mouse. So if the thing passes a wof which it does with not even a comment do i have to do anything?Fwiw a pic of said "to loud things, hardly offensive eh?

The WOF doesn't really mean much, I'm afraid. All it means is that at some stage someone filled out a label - doesn't guarantee that it met the legal requirements at that time, nor that it still does (it may have been rendered illegal 5 minutes after the label was slapped on).
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Now the wind-up's out of the way, sounds a bit like you were unlucky enough to get a c*nty cop... Have you had a noise meter near it?

so what was the outcome then, did ya get ticketed or green stickered or what?

you can have your exhaust certified

in fact the law states that exhausts modified to be significantly louder than standard are no go, which is obviously a fairly grey area.

95db seems to be used as a general rule of thumb, but of course how loud something sounds depends greatly on its surroundings.

That cop obvisiously has 20/20 hearing and you hurt his eardrums, or he's just jealous of your sexy red ute, he's got a Honda City at home.

    Did he ticket you?

Really, depends on the cop and whether he's had it lately and whether it was good.

Friend of mine has one of those noisey subarus, she's been pulled over so many times but never ticketed...I think they just want to check out the driver, if she was young, male and under 25 there'd be tickets galore.

What the viff said. A WOF is only a point in time check, and does not grant immunity or anything for the 6-12 month period.

An officer can direct you to a testing station to have it checked, there are db limits according to engine type, it has to be tested at specified revs etc and it also details out what the area must be like, in which the test is done...

Even so, the law is stupid, full of grey areas, but in short, yes, the officer could have a problem with it, and you have to then go about sorting it (proving its not, or otherwise).

Interesting,so the WOFs not worth the paper its printed on eh,didnt give me a ticket nor direct me to a testing station just told me it would be a good idea to sort it before getting a ticket, buggered if i know everyone ive told about cant understand why he would have bothered as its not loud at all, jesus i am 48 years old not 18 and have no need for an offensively loud car.He was parked up talking to another cop and i had stopped at a compulsory stop then accelerated (slowly) towards where he was yapping, possibly he was just showing off to the other fella, dunno.Weird though. The thing sits pretty low and was waiting for him to start on that but said nothing.

A WOF basically means that the Inspector deemed it adhered to the rules at the time of the inspection.

IIRC, the cops can just listen to it and deem it "too loud" - making you take it to be sorted. AFAIK, they can do it by ear - there's no requirement for the cop to check it with a machine...

you'd think after two years he'd have gotten the message, if he'd read it in the first place.

I got rolled in the GTI-R with no mufflers, and the cop simply said "It's way too loud". He informed me that he didn't have to prove it, but that it was just his opinion. It's your word against the cop, who do you think the judge is going to believe?

If it comes down to it i might just take a trip to a testing station and get it metered as the thing simply isnt loud period, possibly chuck the results in the glove box so i can produce them if i get any more grief from the guy.

If ya ever get a ticket for it just get it & a stock harley tested for "noise pollution" then (providing yours IS quieter then the Harley) just let 'em know where the local biker gang is if their gonna proceed to try & charge you. If they won't accept that then Media might pick it up they'll have a field day with a head line like "Police say Harley's too loud for New Zealand".

But seriously lest you be wearing a backwards cap & baggy trousers while looking through your steering wheel when driving you'll prob never get a ticket for it.
