Also cops are usually quite nice when they are educating.
He was power tripping. Just like when I got pulled over as the RG was "smoking too much".

Fact of the matter is they don't have anything - but sure it was you doing the dodgy.......so try ANYTHING.

Cops aren't bad overall - but like everyone they have bad days.
Well well well, me oh my. I was going to write heaps of shit but will refrain as I am to busy taking notes as I watch Dirty Harry.

a/ He doesn't have to follow ute to the testing station, maybe if he was on a power trip he would have written the vehicle off the road?

b/ How do you know that a warning wasn't given? anyway for all anyone on here knows he may have been happy with the ute after he heard it up close.

c/ I know what you mean, but in seven words or less logistically it is not possible to enforce.

WOF's are a little silly if you look at the fine print. You can get a WOF at 1pm, and get pulled up, and ticketed at 130pm.
reasons being that plenty of people out there take their car for a wof, the go straight home and wind down the adjusties, stick the fart cannon back on, along with their bald, illegal wide tyres that stick out from the body . .
also because items can deteriorate inbetween WOF's, a WOF is really only a snapshot of your vehicles condition on the road that stays valid untill next woftime, or untill an item is questioned by a relevant authority.

Id have thought though, that you should be able to request it be tested noise wise. and faling that you could ask to have it tested properly in a noise controlled booth (if you wanted to be a prick!!)
I didnt think that a simple 'in my opinion its too loud' sufficed now, as I thought the cops had access to devices to actually test the thing, but I may well be wrong on that.

Did you get a ticket for it or was it just a talking to?

They don't even bother testing the vehicle with anything other than their ears. Speaking from personal experience.

    Fair comment.

But I think the people who bother to spend the $150 and get them certified are unlikely to fuck around with it after.

There are plenty of guys and gals running legal certified cars they have poured big bucks into who are not interested in being 'boy racers'.

Sounds like the cop was just giving a verbal warning re pipe - it would be interesting to see what it reads to see how far off he was.

Ironically most of the 'loud' vehicles I see around Christchurch now are big bucks HSV's and the like with big bore pipes driven by 50 year old men. I'd have to admit to desiring a louder pipe on my XR6 - just a bit more to hear the inline 6 you know ........

Interesting read really,at this stage i have no intention of doing anything with it,its simply not loud in anyones opinion other than his and as i live in a small town no doubt we will come across each other again soon enough,if he wants to make an issue of it then i guess ive no choice but to take a trip up to Timaru and get it tested, honestly if for one minute i thought the thing was overly loud i would simply say :fair call" and get it sorted, but its not.If i start the TL up beside it theres no way you can hear the ute and ive never had a problem with the TL.

Policy is, if they think it is too loud they can ticket you.

You can contest this by requesting they do a dbSPL test of your exhaust.

They are SUPPOSE to do it.. but despite the law a lot of places do not stock the equipment to measure it. And it is in the end left to "if they think it is too loud then it is".

If they refuse to accompany you to get it tested, before they fine you, ask for their badge number and who they report to, and file a complaint (and possibly send in an exhaust compliance cert if you want)

BTW, entry level dbSPL readers can be picked up from Dick Smith and Jaycar. You could carry one in the glove box and give him the finger when it shows its in legal limit?

This certifier will measure the noise output of the vehicle using a procedure laid down by NZTA.

If the vehicle passes the exhaust is certified by issuing a certificate and placing a tamper proof plate on the exhaust of the vehicle.

If stopped again you have to be able to produce this certificate and the sticker must be visible and still affixed to the exhaust.

In the event a certified pipe that has not been modified after the cert he has a full record to dispute any ticket etc.

I have however heard a complaint or two regarding his db reading as he is down a back section surrounded by concrete walls that reverberate the sound off them!

I do have to say that in Christchurch I have noticed a reduction in the numbers of really cars since the laws introduction.

    Which is were it fails!

The 1976 Traffic Regulations had the same noise level restrictions we have now.

They had a BS (British Standard) which defined how a vehicle should be measured for dB output. Including the distances, gears, directions and environments in which the sound measuring should take place.

We have replaced it with a rather "No.8 Wire" type testing method.

@ the OP.. Problem is, You have a ford. Had it been a Holden with them exhausts, You wouldnt of had a problem!

In all honesty though, I've heard some big fuck off cars go past (live beside a gap in the middle of the road to do a u-turn on) and damn... Big block Chevs, Ferrari, Holdens, Fords, Subarus.. And yes.. They do sound loud. But not loud enough!

You probably had a cop that didnt like a Nice V8 Rumble coming from a Ford...
The only stupid question is a question not asked!

As a Ford owner I agree with you 100%.

As you point out a Holden would not be a issue - as we all know, even with NO muffler a Holden would make such a wimpy sound that it would not attract any attention.

LOL ...nearly spat my coffee out over that one TL.
Nice ute! (red ones go faster I hear), shame about the cop getting picky
Get the pipes certified mate, no more probs then.."another" bloody bill tho
I get stopped by the check points in CHCH nearly every fri/sat after work @ 1am, the cops are usually very nice (flash em the work badge ...and remind them who fixes there coms lol), there have been 2 occasions when they thought the termi's where to loud, but both times I just laughed and appologized for "PhatGirls" attitude when cold and made a friendly comment about "boyracers" forcing them to be so concerned...works nicely lol

PS: Loved the pics of the puppy!...so cute! , hope the furniture survives lol
