Hi guys, just playing around trying to get video clips on the computor. Have a look and let me know what ya think.

It's 18 seconds long and 2.9Mb, how does that compare with others? What do other people use for format, i.e. mpeg1 or 2?, avi etc. Any help appreciated.

Nice bit of video

I'd suggest using an mpeg4 codec, such as XviD or DivX. You can download XviD from: http://www.koepi.org/xvid.shtml

It'll let you compress the video more while not losing too much quality.

For the audio, I'd recommend changing it to mono (the original track was sterio with sound only in the left channel) and encoding it as mp3, if you haven't got an mp3 encoder, try LAME.

I don't know what software you're using to edit and save the video, if you're happy with it and it can use the other codecs, I guess stick with it.
Otherwise you could try VirtualDub.

All the above software is free. I've attached the same video compressed with XviD and mp3 audio and the size is down to 1.05MB. You could compress it further or less, depending on how you want the quality.

Other stuff I've found useful:

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ for figuring out what a video has been encoded with/what options have been used.

Picture quality wasn't the greatest but it didn't really matter to me being such a short clip.

Enjoyable to watch Frosty & KK racing eachother...KK nearly got past Frosty on the inside but Frosty retained the lead out of the corner, good stuff.

cheers for that erik, next time your around dude tell me more about the whole converting stuff etc and TV tuner cards! id love to learn a little more and have a play, in the mean time have downloaded what uve got up there except lame - i couldnt see on their site that you can still download it? either way i have it on my PC (or an old version) from audiograbber days.

Sorry about that, it's been a while since I downloaded LAME.
Just checked the audacity website, which uses LAME for exporting mp3, and it has links to http://mitiok.free.fr/ for downloading LAME binaries.
It's one of those things like XviD where the developers can't release a binary/executable because of patent laws or something, so they just release the source code on the official LAME website and rely on others to distribute binaries.
But if you've already got a version installed that works, just use that, unless you start having problems with it or something.

[edit: one thing I should maybe point out is that when you're using mp3 audio in .avi files, you should stick to CBR (constant bitrate) encoding when you're choosing how you want to compress the audio. Here's a bit of an explanation of why: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guid...h/audio6a.html ]
