How important is air flow around your CDI.
i know some bikes have this unit under the seat, some up front of engine some down beside the engine... your thoughts.

Not very important. Reg/recs like a little flow tho to help cool them.

The XLV750 shifted it's CDI units to the rear of the guard under the seat because they failed in the original position.Mine was the later version so can't give any failure stories.
where did they place it first off....was it a water problem or other..

We only got the black engine RF model,so haven't seen an earlier RD01....but I think they were further forward under the rider.It's 5 years since I had mine,and can't find the old XLV750 website....probably gone now.
Healthy batteries are more important to CDI's than location generally.
One sure way to damage them is repeatadlybump starting bikes with flat batteries, and relying on the charging system to supply an even voltage through the complete electrical system.
Americans grizzle about failed ignitions systems often, but alot of the time its due to poor battery maintenance.MHO
edit. There are very few genuine CDI, (capacitor discharge Ignition) systems operating on modern bikes.
Most are transistorised systems, hence the need for healthy batts.
Ol xr200's etc used true CDI's. Batts not required.
