I know this might be like asking "how long is a piece of string", but what is the normal mark up above cost price for high performance tyres, either for bikes or cages?

A peice of string is twice the distance from the middle to the end !!
Tyre prices depend on the price the shop has to pay !!
Stocked brand and volume !
When I was selling car tyres I worked on a 40% mark up....the more expensive the tyre, there is generally less mark up as you don't sell as many. You really have to work hard to get someone into $1,000 of tyres. When you factor in your free fitting and balancing, and the cost of tyre machine and balancer,it works out nothing too flash.Volume sales is where the money is made, not selling a few a day like I was.
When I was working in a tyre shop. The mark up on car tyres was from $35 - $50.00. And that varied, usually less markup, depending on how many, and how regular the customer was. I remember the boss doing a set of chrome mag wheels, worth 3500, with onlt 200.00 profit, just to get the deal. His favourite saying was, a dollar in my pocket is better than a dollar in the competitors.
"No matter what bike you ride. It's all the same wind in your face"
Irrelevant really mate.
Shop around, not much haggle on bike tyres but I'm always surprised what they will drop on car tyres.
The reason I'm asking is because a mate of mine works at one of the big chain cage tyre shops, and he said he could order in a Sport Demon tyre for my bike, I'm just not sure as to what I should pay for it.
Ring around the bike shops for a price on that tyre.
Then factor in fitting and balancing.
That's what he/she has to better - hopefully by a decent margin
Be interesting to see where it is at - I'd presume the bike shops would get a better discount due to volume of bike tyres. Depends who imports them I guess.
A while back I got myself some bike tyres when I worked in a tyre shop and I paid cost + gst + shipping.
After thinking I got a mean deal I realised that bike shops RETAIL them for what I paid.
So long story short, tyre shops will usually pay more cost than bike shops every will.
Car tyre places can get bike tyres... not sure how legit it is, but I've got tyres that way before. Realistically tho, they're still buying from the same importer (depending on brand obviously), and I thought I was getting a good price.
Ended up mentioning to my shop in an off hand manner, and since the tyres were on special, they ended up matching the price, so I bought another couple of sets.
Usually, for the bike shops, its around cost + 15% absolute minimum, and thats you being a great customer. Shops usually just use RRP as a guide, then if you're a regular, a bit of a discount.
Bought 3 sets of tyres in the last couple of months... all for one bikeAt least I should be set for the rest of the year and hopefully a bit of the next.

I might just buy the tyre from a bike shop then. It'll be a lot of hassle to get the tyre because he has to talk to his boss first and then order it in etc.
