    Talking Riddle me this

My bike is of the variety that you have to take note of the trip meter to guage when you might need fuel. I have it fairly well sorted now.

Life has been busy, and time short so I got my people to buy gas in a can and top up BB as I am not going to have time. Not entirely sure now what my range is. Still she runs well and I have a reasonable idea of when I should buy gas.

Head to Auckland today to ride the pink ribbon route, I know I am going to need fuel as soon as we get down there. I watch the guage... I squint at it... I thought it said 100.07 last time I looked, nah...

So I look again 100.07???? Hmmmmmmm now I have to watch it...

It does not move. I have done a trip of 100.07 kms for the last 60 kms! I buy gas and reset the trip meter. Oh joy, I no longer have a trip meter.

So, the riddle me question is this.

How come my speedo works, and my odometer works

and my trip meter has stopped? I reset it at the gas station, it worked sort of... NOT.

I need a new name for my bike. I think she may become the old blue clunker that I love.

Might be similar to my Guzzi - trip meter has a totally separate drive cog to the main odometer - mine has a broken tooth (I know 'cause I pulled it apart to find out) and therefore main meter works, but trip does not. (poxy little plastic cog !!!!) pretty much non-repairable.
I have to rely on the "bum-o-meter" - bum starts to ache after about 160-180 kms. Bike will actually do well in excess of 300kms before hitting warning light (which should give another 80kms - so I'm told) by the time I get to 250kms, I've usually decided to have a break.

you have a warning light... wow
mine coughs, switch to reserve which for reasons unknown doesnt seem to do much as about 1km later after much spluttering runs out.
I watch the trip meter like a hawk & fill at 280km as walking in bike gear sucks.
If bike speedos are anything like car ones then as already noted the trip meter generally runs off a seperate cog.

I dont mind the switch to reserve thing, I just prefer knowing about when I might have to. 280 kms! Wow weee that is huge tank range. I am happy with 220. Lazy me reads the trip meter, now I have to do maths

So 2 cogs drive the speedo. Trip meter has seperate cog (plastic sucks)?

Where do I go to find the fix?

could try & get a speedo from a bike wrecker & get bits out of it.
I dont know of any but im sure there must be some. Yellow pages?
Or you must be known by a bike mechanic somewhere, just flutter your eylashes in their direction.
By the way, see you tomorrow @ the carpark

Light? Turn on? The BB will go to 180 and start to cough and splutter, 200 is a good run, 220 makes for an unpleasant trip, depends on how heavy handed I am.

I have to remember 972, 972, 972 that is when I last filled...

And now I have to do maths.

Best bit of today, the BB clicked over 93,000kms!

....paranoia of running out of the good stuff is a healthy trait to have...unless you get it bad like i have it...last time i filled our goldwing from empty cost over thirty bucks....probably a lot more now, but i have this paranoia, dont forget..it was a while ago....we did a little loop of the SI a while back....my paranoia of having to push a leadwing any distance, had me so fucked that it managed to stop me constantly and i'd poke in, on average..14 to 15 bucks worth...

Contact AJ Parrats in Christchurch, they do great work, and have always been able to fix everything I have sent them.

    Guzzi m.p.g. - or should that be km/l - or l/km ??

My Guzzi has approx. 4.5 gallon (21 litre) "main" tank, and a 1 gallon (4.54 l ) "reserve" - I get around 50 m.p.g. (18km/l - 5.5l/100km) - there's no "reserve" switch, just the little lighty! (which starts to flash under braking at about 150kms) I have run to app. 220miles (350km) without it coming fully on - but I was getting a bit nervous - 0500hrs in eastern europe!

I'm so thankful for my little gauge that tells me how much juice I have on board...and I'm still paranoid about running out. I've never run out of petrol and never wish too, that would be awful and annoying.

Have a good ride today Mom.

Check out those wee digital speedos for pushbikes. A little magnet on the inside of the fork & one on your wheel, you calibrate the speedo & live happily everafter. The one i used in the UK was very accurate, MPH, KMH, two distance trips & a lap timer. Might be cheaper than a repair.

Does your trip meter include the 10ths? That one might be moving?
Analogue numbers are on a little wheel, each with a 'tit' on the 9 (say) that engages with the wheel to it's left to click that one over to the next number. If the 'tit' is broken, the process stops.
This was the case on an L300 I had years ago. On the main odometer. I had no idea it was like that when I bought it. Damned if I know how many kms it had done before I fixed it.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

No, the trip meter was stuck on 100.4, then I reset it and it got to almost turned over to twelve but only half of the numbers were visible. I did not refuel before this ride out today, bit of a risk as my maths skills are far from wonderful. I eventually had to switch to reserve at just under 200kms so that is great! Interestingly I reset the trip meter and it functions perfectly

    Got to love the BB
