DONT...call me..PAKEHA!
As this translated means "smelly white pig"
(grew up in Kapiti, were the term was invented by Te Rauparaha!)
Im not aloud to be proud of my scottish heritage......cos Im just "White" ..non classified apparently, but Im expected to know every other races cultures, beliefs and stone age customs...or else IM racist!
I personally don't give 2 flyin shits what race, colour or sex you are....I just want to be treated fairly & equally within my OWN country....I live here to!...members of my family went to war to protect NZ...and they didnt come back either! (fell at chunik bair...to english arty cover fire!..go figure!).
I believe in an old saying...you have to show respect, to be respected!....yet all I see is reverse racisim and alot of hands out, just to keep a group of self-centred people from being MORE threatning and even more racist!
One people indeed!
When Life thows me a curve
...I lean into it!
I agree with you completely regarding respect. Everyone is entitled to your respect and vice versa - until something happens to reduce that respect.
I can't say I feel threatened by Maori but maybe that's a South Island thing. Ngai Tahu are very astute and successful here.
Consider this: if Maori renaissance was ignored by the rest of NZ, they would simply fade away as a culture and a race. We might keep bits like the haka and tourist shows but it would be as relevant as the Druids which attend Stonehenge each solstice. An historic curiosity.
Our Maori culture and language is unique to New Zealand and I think we would all be poorer if it was lost. Retaining it requires Maori to have self-respect and gaining that requires them to hold land and rights. Which Europeans had taken away.
From http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics...ing-the-treaty
The actual wording of his instructions wereWilliam Hobson arrived in New Zealand on 29 January 1840. As lieutenant-governor of a colony that did not yet exist and the extent of which had not been decided, his task was to take possession of it with the consent of the Maori chiefs.
(Italics are mine.) http://www.treatyofwaitangi.net.nz/L...nbysBrief.htmlIt is not, however, to the mere recognition of the sovereign authority of the Queen that your endeavours are to be confined, or your negotiations directed. It is further necessary that the chiefs should be induced, if possible, to contract with you, as representing Her Majesty, that henceforward no lands shall be ceded, either gratuitously or otherwise, except to the Crown of Great Britain.
So it certainly appears to me that Hobson was instructed to enter a treaty (contract) with the Maori chiefs.
Time to ride
Well they can go back to wearing grass skirts, living in shacks and cooking in the ground if they reeeeally want.
But most of them seem to prefer some hoodies from Farmers, a house from the Govt and as much KFC as their benefit will provide, for some strange reason.
