Now that is a justifiable sentence!!!

"On the charge of murder in the first degree, you are hereby confined and imprisoned to the state penetentiary for life, with a mandatory term of 50 years to be served before eligibility of parole."*

Now that is an excellent sentence! Come to NZ, where we will give you 16 years for 5 murders!

Where is the accountability and the justice?

*The sentence was handed down for a guy who killed his girlfriend.

New Zealand has one of this highest incarceration rates in the developed world. I don't think that locking people up is an answer in itself. We also tend to lock folks up for unreasonably long times for crimes against or involving property, and for comparatively short time for crimes against people. But then that's just a generalisation.

And all generalisations are false (including this one).

I propose 50 years doing slave labour so that they can pay for the cost of the jails. Maybe making NZ T-shirts for tourist or somthing like that.

Now thats actually a bloody good idea!! Some people in Jail get looked after better than us! They get meals cooked for them basically everything is done for them, don't think that most of them even have to THINK for themselves!

You known how the new Motorway proposal is budgeted to cost us $billions? Why not use all those FREE labour in prison to build the motorways for us? Free prison labour should reduce our motorway construction cost by at least 30%. And when they come out of prison they should have a skill as a construction worker. There should be no excuse for not working. Problems solved !

it may be a generalisation but I still remember been pissed off that some guys who tried to steal an ATM (sounded well thought out, no armed robbery required etc) got 16 years or there abouts and a mother who beat her baby to death with a kettle cord got 3 or 4 years! WTF ?
    pretty clear message there...........

Ooooh...ATM ACC works for me...but, just last night, some random person on the street said I looked familiar, and often people say I am remarkable, so, I guess that makes me remarkably familiar?

Rep points for whoever can tell me where I work (Just because I can't remember)

Great on paper, but wouldn't that result in higher unemployment down the line..?

Personally, I find it hard to believe that property can be put at a higher value than people's lives; and why is it that 'white collar' thieves (that usually get away with much higher sums) get less time than 'ordinary' thieves...? Hmmm.
