    High electricity prices likely.

"The Domestic Energy Users' Network says the wholesale price for electricity has risen from 8.5 cents per kilowatt hour on the first of December to 23 cents per kilowatt hour two days ago."

Not so bad in the summer, but that's gonna be a bit of a bastard come winter time. Wonder why the huge jump?

That's fucken absurd. Are they trying to insinuate that the costs of providing it have gone up over 50% or something?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the major energy suppliers are all state owned enterprises. And they are setting these high prices.

    your wrong !!!

but the demand for electricity is growing, the connection between north & south isl have not been upgraded so there are constraints moving electricity to where its needed, and of course all the renewable energy required to generate enough electricity to meet growing demand has to be paid for somehow ..

but then what do I know

    Hahaha, yeh well, apparently.

Now I know why the Auckland council are rewarding themselves so hugely prematurely, it's not because of the work they'll be doing, it's so they can survive through all the inflation.

It rather infuriates me how they always adjust their salaries so massively for inflation everytime there's an increase in living expenses, and %age wise it's always massively above anyone elses so-called payrises, and their salaries are already rather large anyway. Surely they should'nt need to rise by such a large percentage more all the time but they always get it.

I've had occasion of late to note the contorted reasoning with which most councils have distanced their rates revenue policy from plumeting property prices.

Arseholes. About time the lot were up agin' the wall.

Something else that really pissed me off. Rates on my place before I sold it were based on property value of $320+k. We paid 240 for it and it had'nt sold for more than 280K........ever.

That really used to piss me off, I don't blame QV either, I think the lowered valuations are just ignored by the council and they just go off the highest ever valuation that has been given, no matter how old.

The actual QV reports you get done not ignored by council are far more accurate, well for us it was. To say our 2 bedroom unit in Massey was worth 320k was an absolute fucken joke. Our valuation we had done put it at exactly what ended up selling it for, and we never thought we'd get anywhere near what we did (270) absolute luck.

there is a difference between wholesale pricing & retail pricing, you have generation, transmission, network & your retailer costs added in

The government may eventually push electricity prices so high that it might be cheaper to buy your own diesel generator.
