Piston clips?

Where is a good place to get 'em?

When I was doing lots of work on the streetstock bikes I was going to the local honda dealer and buying individually wraped clips for a CR125 @ $2 Each.

The bike shops I have tried have no way of looking them up by size so if I do it that way I need to know what bike in their brand has the same size clip as the one I wa

So:

1) Is there a better place than a bikeshop?

2) What Yamaha uses the same clips as a Honda MB100, preferably without the wee tails? (Still havn't measured the MB ones yet, Must do ASAP)

If memory serves the last 2 digits of the Yamaha part no are the circlip size..

In ChCh anyway Proturn Eng carry a pretty good range of piston circlips. He's agent for Arias pistons so look for someone in your area in the automotive performance field.
FWIW - $2 each is pretty cheap insurance and you'll stuggle to find anything cheaper.

Yeah, I've seen the results of one coming out before...

When I went to the local engine re-conditioners the guy just handed me a big box of assorted clips and said "Look through that".
The box had almost no wire ones in it.

I've bought MB100 circlips by the "bag of 10" from the bike shop. I'm using KT100 pistons now and have used KT clips and the MB clips without dramas. suggestion - go to your local kart shop, they will have clips in stock and pretty cheap as well usually.
I always destroy circlips the moment i take them out so I can't be tempted later to reuse them.

Are you allowed to be using race parts in your motor you naughty man??

Well Pistons are no restrictions, that must continue to the clips. What road bike were those Lonchin engines used in again?

I've been re-using circlips for over 30 years. Never had one come out. It depends how you take them out and how you put them in as to whether they stay in or not.

If you have to bend them say 10% to put them in and then bend them 10% to get them out, there will be no damage to the steel structure.

You don't take an end and yank it out, you take one end and slip it out the groove, you then take a needle nose pliers and turn the clip through 180 degrees to remove it.

Yep..... I have seen TeeZee re-use circlips too, never heard of a problem.

I've seen the results of a small end mismatch pushing the pin sideways popping the pin out & rooting the barrel from any sort of reasonable repair.

Yes that Young chap did have some interesting experiments with elasticity & steel is a wonder material, if kept within it's boundaries, I just don't think it's worth the risk for a couple of bucks.

Never heard of the problem? Not read Bells book then?
