Failed carb clean?

Ok, my '86 GSX400x was running fairly crap, not going into idle very well etc, So i decided to pull the carbs and clean them out.

However, now theyre back on the bike, it idles far better than before (it was missing and unstable idle) but it is constantly backfiring at idle, and it wont rev out pretty much at all...

I didnt change any needle settings, pilot screws are set at stock and have fiddled with them to no avail.

Does anyone have any suggestions or am I doomed to take it to a shop and spend probably what the bikes worth again on getting it sorted?

How did you clean them? Gotta be careful you don't dislodge something that can block a jet. The other thing is, those CV carb seals can get brittle. If you've unwittingly holed one, you're in shitters ditch.

maybe the carbs wern't the problem to start with ... sounds more like a timing issue ...

but I could be (often am) wrong ...

i pulled them completely apart removed all rubber bits and carb cleaner/compressed aired them out. The rubber boots and orings dont seem too bad, So im wondering if I have maybe put something back together wrong, although that seems like something that would be kind of difficult to do...

And yes, it could have been timing as well, but now ive got other problems first ah well, typical me, straight in the deep end...

With respect the carb cleaner only does part of the job.
The very small holes in the air intakes and such are such a way you can never get them clean with out soaking them in white viniger.
i have posted before how and what to do and it works a treat and i have done it more than once.

Im guessing ive put something together wrong then, will strip them back out and try re assembly. damn the airbox is evil (impossible) to get back on. theres no space for my hands round there...

I didnt split them, in the hopes I wouldnt have to rebalance them, but now all it does is spin, fire occasionally and blow back out the right hand carb

I have made the most embarrasing newbie mistake ever, and luckily I realised, I had nearly given up and sent it to a bike shop, which would have been even worse.

Here it comes...

cylinders 3 + 4 plug leads were the wrong way round. Its a wonder I even got it idling although backfiring idle.

Now the plugs are the right way, the bike runs great.
