    Pinking/detonation

    Afternoon all.

I've just finished an 800k ride down the south island. All went reasonably well except for soreness!!

In the last 200ks of the trip I noticed that the engine was making a clicking noise when I came off the power (closed the throttle). Is this pinking/detonation? And furthermore, is it something to be worried about? I use 96 octane fuel all the time, is there such a thing as 'off' fuel?

Maybe this is too high or low octane for my bike?

Any thoughts/help greatly appreciated as I'm riding another 800k on Monday!

Pinking does not happen on deceleration, only when giving it gas under load with fuel that is too-low an octane for the timing.
How many kms has your bike done in total? I'm thinking cam chain/tensioner.
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

Back to back 800km rides on a 250. Those were the days........
Hope you get the issue sorted. As mentioned Id go with the cam chain theory or drive chain, something clanging about when the load comes off it.

Little ends as you roll off the throttle.

Yeah it was the chain, must've loosened itself. Thanks for the help.

It actually happened again on the way home. Maybe a sign you shouldnt do a 1000k trip on a 250!
