    Can you diagnose the following?

Yesterday I took the bike for a good ride, was running sweet on the flat and then headed up a hill and she started to bog down a bit. It would not power on and felt down right weird. I pulled over and Flip took a look at the bike, and he thought there is water in the tank. I got it going again after Flip gave the bike a shake. (I must mention that the bike did stall when I stopped at a pedestrian crossing(maybe about 3 to 5 mins before I pulled over), maybe more proving that the bike may indeed have water in the tank?)

I rode it for the rest of the morning and it seemed to run pretty well. Rode it home after the rides destination and it seemed fine then too.

Went out about 15mins ago to start the bike and it doesn't want to start. I have not sat there for 10 mins trying to start it and will go out again soon to try and fire it up. But even if it does start, what is causing this issue?

Also something of importance is that the bike back-fired when trying to start it before and there is like black 'build up' coming out of the exhaust.

I do not know how to drain the bowls in the carbs or whatever it is, but what if I chuck some meths in the tank? My fuel tank is 15 litres, so how much meths would need to be put into it? (that's even if it is worth doing as it will not start currently)

    thanks for the help.

check ignition leads are tightly screwed to plug caps.

Fuel tap on? maybe clogged line

    Fuel pump click away alright?

are you close to hitting reserve?

not close at all to reserve, fuel pump clicks. As for the other suggestions, I will have a wee poke around soon. Thanks

Battery voltage & regulator seemed ok the other night...

I did notice when I was following you that the top muffler was a bit grubbier than the bottom one, is it a 4-2 or 4-1-2 exhaust?
Riding cheap crappy old bikes badly since 1987

    It's a 4 - 2. What would a grubbier top exhaust suggest?

I'd start with draining the tank to see if there any water or rust flake in it, don't just chuck meths at it !
A manual might help cause if there is water or flake in the tank, you'll have to drain and clean the carbs of flake ! Has it got an inline fuel filter ? If so check that, if not, it might pay to look at gettin one

Next stop is the air filter, then clean the plugs if ya don't wanna spend on new ones !

Sooting the pipes is a sure sign its too rich or the pipes need repacking (it's about the right age for it !)
A girlfriend once asked " Why is it you seem to prefer to race, than spend time with me ?"
The answer was simple ! "I'll prolly get bored with racing too, once i've nailed it !"

    Bowls can wait !

Scoot is correct, it is the needles or the tubes that are bung. They need to be machined. I believe the tube is no longer circular as the needle has worn it out of shape and now lets too much fuel in when riding in the mid-range.

Thanks for all the suggestions etc people

See it all the time especially with dynojet kits. My experience is its the tubes that wear out so a new set of carbs is needed unfortunately. It will let fuel through even at idle if you shine a torch down there you will see it perculate up the tube and past the needle.

If that's expensive then I really hope that that is not the case.

Cheers mate, Ian said he can repair it properly in the New Year after his Xmas break. If you would still like a look at it then perhaps sometime after xmas and before Ian takes it in.
