    Angry

I was shunted forward by some chick on a cellphone while I was sitting stationary at a red light. I heard the tyres squealing, and didn't have the presence of mind (or the suppleness) to turn around and look or move out of the way.

The bike was shunted out from between my legs into the intersection, and I fell into the gap between bike and car bumper, the bumper then hammered my back (which went lame for a few weeks after) , pushing me into the intersection (thankfully not under the car).

The skid marks were 35 metres (yes 3-5) long - on a quite a steep uphill. The tarffic light had turned red, and had been red for a couple of second already. WTF was that bitch thinking? Maybe she just was not.

Moral of the story: Turn and look (if you can)!! I might have been able to jump/ride away if I had...

    Sounds reasonable to me

Lynn Mall is horrible at the best of times, and it is not just the cars, the buses in the streets around there are a menace, they think they are a law unto themselves at times (and I ain't arguing) Hope you are feeling better.

When I pull up to traffic lights, I paranoidly glance in my mirrors for a car approaching. Only once there's a vehicle stopped behind me do I pop it in Neutral (if I think the lights will stay red a bit longer) and stop checking the mirrors. It wasn't that long ago that a group of bikers had a truck plough through them at some lights cos the truck driver wasn't paying attention

I never put it in neutral and do check behind me before stopping and while waiting, however when I had been waiting for over a minute and about to take off was paying more attention to what was in front of me. Too bad the other guy wasn't (no screeching btw, just a thud)

Yeah, there's everything you can do to mitigate risk and then there's just stuff that's out of your control. Writing that and reading the thread tag made me LOL

Yeah my friend recently up in Auckland had a car decide that he wanted to be in his lane.
It was a fairly low speed accident with my mate taking a nose dive at about 15kmph as he'd slowed down to avoid the accident. The drivers first words were "I'm so sorry I didn't see you there". Basically he admitted fault straight away, details were exchanged and they both drove away. Come time to 'fess up to his insurance company however the said driver at fault envisioned his no claims bonus flying away in the distance, and subsequently changed his story to "I don't know what happened, he just came out of no where and hit me" He was going for a 50/50 deal with both insurance companies paying for the respected damage.
A few holes were in his story, the damage to his car was on the side, Ryan was able to ride away and play a game of touch before heading home. You'd think that if he'd "Came out of nowhere and hit him" that Ryan would not be among us anymore and the damage to the bike would have been catastrophic.
I think both insurance companies saw through the bull shit though and the ignorant lying asshole had to pay for the lot.

Hope your leg heals well and that the person that did this gets struck by some Karma.

Well they should be asked to give evidence under oath. If they then lie under oath in court, that will be perjury, and punishable by a fine or prison or both - and possibly also contempt of court .

Also gives you evidence for your insurance company to back up any discrepancies in their story. And for getting a pic of the reg.

I never even thought about this idea until my mate mentioned it to me.

I once had a guy turn in front of me while in the cage. Didn't signal, no lights or anything. I had pics to show all of the old damage that was on his cage prior to the accident. ie made sure that he was not going to get his pile of crap fixed at my expense. Made sure that I got pics of his rear brake light sitting face down on the parcel shelf and his broken indicators on the side I didn't hit. My insurance company immediately stated that his car was not road worthy and that there was no way he could have signaled given the state of his indicators etc.

Update for everyone who is interested: Got a letter from protecta saying my bike is being written off, but the excess has been waived so they obviously see it was the other guy's fault. Too bad they're only giving me $1800 still so I won't be able to get a bike in anywhere near the condition the fxr was in before the crash, esp at this time of year... I guess I need to find some more money and go bike shopping

Heya, R-Soul I'm thinking that myself. Still waiting to hear anything back from the cops though.

Hawkeye; that's a really good idea, might look into that when I get another bike

Sorry to hear you're not getting as much as you want, insurance companies are like that. When I wrote off my van which I'd paid $4k for and spent $2.5k on, I got $3k less excess for it based on two independent valuations... Sux, eh?

How much did you expect for the fxr? A friend of mine managed to pick one up for $1800, almost mint and only had 8k on the clock.

Good luck in your bike hunting though. Save as much money as you can and enjoy riding everything you can get your hands on!!

Can't say I expected anything more, but to get another without broken fairing (of which mine had none even after the accident) or heaps of scrapes (because mine was mint when I got it and only received a cracked wing mirror with me) trademe has the cheapest at 2100 that I could find. But as was said, it's the sentimental value that really hurts, I loved that little thing.

Thinking of trying to get together a bit bigger sum and going for a bandit or something similar

FXR prices are up there at the moment eh? If you had it insured for market value might pay to get a second opinion (valuation) and take that back to them...
