They are brutal on Captains. Border and Waugh were exited before they should have been. Taylor when he saw it coming.
Ponting made comment bak in July-ish that his days as captain would be over if they lost the ashes. Whether that was signalling his intention or a prediction on what the management/media/fans demanded I'm not sure.
One way or another we may find out.opcorn:
ps - Pontings *recent* track record as batsman and captain hasn't been great....by aussie standards.
Because he's not a very good captain tactically - he's far too cautious with field placings and especially with declarations (he'll always bat on to avoid the possibility of losing which usually means he misses the chance of a win).
Now he's lost the great players he had previously his captaincy limitations are shown up and the pressure has affected his batting.
It was quite amusing to watch him chasing the ball with his close-in field placings during the England innings - he'd place a fielder where the ball just went and watch the next ball go through where the fielder (usually himself) had just been![]()
Even if Australia lose this Ashes series I will be surprised to see Ponting lose his role as Captain. With his batting average at well over 50 and his pretty good captaincy career behind him, I can't see him getting the axe.
Michael Clarke is a bit of a douche and I personally do not see him haveing the nous for leading Australia. Shane Watson should jump down to Marcus North's position at 6 with Hughes or some young fella taking Watson's opening role and Watson can become more of an all rounder and not be wrapped up in cotton wool when it is near the oppositions innings so he is 'fresh' for opening the batting.
Bollinger may also be cut from the next game if his fitness is not improved by the next match in Perth. His spells later in the innings lacked any ability to be a threat to the English.
It is also sweet watching a batting line up all in form in the one match, no one for the English is walking out there in poor from and I can't wait for the next match.
As for other possible captain in the Aussie team, well there are fuck all options. Mr Cricket is as old as Ponting, Haddin is over 30 so would not captain for a long time. (Most Aussie captains have the role for a pretty long time)
From my armchair, it would seem that the 'Golden days' of Australian cricket is over. Much like the West Indies team from the 80's.

I've heard that Richie Benaud has flown to Perth early to get some net practice in. My sources tell me however that he cannot reach down to field a ball without shitting himself.
A supreme display of swing bowling by Mitchel Johnson (not forgetting his batting yesterday)and this is "game on."
Pressures on and he's stepped up.Aint it a great game?Gotta love the WACA.
If this series was being played on the sub-continent, there'd be allegations of match fixing.
