    Holiday road toll proposal

It occurs to me that the significant common factor in all holiday road deaths is obvious:

    The holiday.

By having statutory holidays, we ensure that there will be many people trying to go on holiday at the same time, loading up the roads.

If we just got rid of the fixed holidays, and upped the annual leave allocation to 5 weeks, traffic would be much less temporally concentrated.

Additionally, holiday destinations wouldn't be so crowded, and we wouldn't be discriminating against non-Christians.

That's why I stay off the roads as much as possible in these peak holiday times. Too many cops on the roads, and too many muppets out there.

In a similar vein, it occurs to me that every pursuit ending in a fatality has the withdrawal of the police 20 seconds before the accident as a common denominator.

Hypothesis:- Not abandoning the pursuit will result in zero deaths!

A holiday road toll of say 5 or 6 deaths (being those fuckwits that need culled from the population) would be just fine IMHO.

OK, in the summer, I'll go to the beach. You and everyone else should either continue working or stay at home, except the hot women In the winter I'll go to the snow; you should stay at home, go to work, or optionally you could go to the beach. Non-Christians should be banned from spending time with their families around December 25 and only 1 in 365 people should be allowed time off on the 1st of January

At least you're trying to think of solutions that might work instead of reducing the speed tolerance and claiming its effectiveness in the absense of data. Now, if someone can think of something else that might work, we'll all be better off

Christmas/New Year isn't the whole of summer. Queen's Birthday isn't the whole of winter.

I'm generally just as happy going on holiday in mid-January, or February, when the crowds are thinner. Pity I had to take time off work for 4 days when I didn't have anywhere to go. I have no problem with allowing people to take their leave whenever they want.

Admittedly, some people seem to like specifically going to places (Taupo, Mt Maunganui etc at New Year) where there will be large crowds; I'm not one of them, and I suspect they're not the majority.

That had crossed my mind - absolutely reasonable to take 2 days off each week, but why do they have to be the same 2 for everybody?

Do you think it's reasonable for government to specifically take into account the traditions of one particular religious group?

Not that it was the main point of my suggestion, of course.

Working in IT, its service orientated. Public holidays give somewhat of an excuse to not work, or at least not be rung, which gives a nice break. I'd rather have holidays, and if the idiots are the ones being culled, I don't mind that either.

...a lot of the time its the idiots doing the culling too, dont forget...lotsa good boys and girls have bought the farm on these bottlenecks of national stupidity called Christmas Holidays...it seems like half the rules get discarded by drivers at this time of year, all in some kind of institutionally ingrained sense of, some kind of holiday rush...
