Touring the South Island. Recommendations?

Hey... Hell hath broken loose

and I am going to be touring the South Island over summer in a van... So I'm looking for suggestions of things to do and places to see.

The plan is to travel towards Stewart Island via the East Coast and back up to Wellington via the West Coast, so the idea of this thread is to post up when I'm in certain areas and get some pointers of things/places etc.

Also if anyone would be kind enough to let me use a shower now and then I would be most grateful!

Leaving Wellington around 2nd week of Jan-ish...

So make some suggestions!!

my only suggestion......... sell the van. do it on a bike. You will enjoy it MUCH more.

hmmm... nah not going on a bike. Half the reason I'm going is to surf my way around the south island at all possible surf beaches, not too keen to carry my board and wettie and all my gear on a bike. Cant sleep in my bike either... well actually dont have a bike, sold it to buy the van...

maungamanu............HW 1 bit north of kaikoura........you wont miss it......usually a few surfers there........or the meatworks........even closer to kaikoura........where the HW 1 sort of leaves the coast and veers inland......turn off to ya left ...gravel road follows the sea line...........or gore bay.....another good break im told..........st kilda beach dunedin............think you can google earth all these spots and tons in between...........

Sweet thanks! Got myself a new surfboard today too!
