No mention of Vinnie Paul?
My vote goes to Nicko Mcbrain.

keith moon-the who.
and that dude with the dredds from faith no more he plays for ozzy aswell
Me too for Neil Peart as the best rock drummer of them all.
Modern Drummer magazine likes him too. Bling to you Henry.
Buddy Rich was probably a better percussionist (YMMV) but by all accounts he was a total cock to work with, there was a reason he was freelance!
Mitch Mitchell was vastly underrated IMHO. He gave a lot of structure to the Hendrix guitar work and without him Jimi sounded disorganised.
Went to a Sergio Mendes concert years ago. It was supported by 100, yes 100 drummers. It was crazy.
Chris Adler - Lamb Of God
Faust - Emperor
Dave Lombardo - Slayer

Steve Gadd
Jeff Pocaro
Went to the Steely Dan concert in the weekend and was totally blown away by Keith Carlock.
What about this dude? Bit of a muppet though.
Also went to the Steely Dan concert last Saturday. To my shame, I couldn't remember the drummer's name and I had never heard it before.
His performance alone made the concert attendance worthwhile. Astounding versatility and technical competence!
Keith Carlock - I shall remember that henceforth
I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I always was.
Travis Smith - Trivium
Brann Dailor - Mastodon
Mike "Puffy" Bordin - Faith No More
Most others have been covered already.
2c.
Peace hath higher tests of manhood
than battle ever knew.
Vinnie Paul - pantera
Jan Axel Blomberg - kovenant(especially the animatronic album)
topper headon - the clash
Mike Shrieve
nicko Mcbrain has such a unique sound
ever watched the death on the road DVD? the Drum tech at the studio says his sounds owe to the fact that he doesn't take alot of time setting up mic's for the drums, just throws them down. If nicko hits them well, it'll sound good, if he doesn't, it won't. says alot for the mans skill
Charlie Benante (Anthrax)
Will Calhoun (Living Colour)
Some of my favourites in no particular order:
Mark Rees - Subtract
Mike Portnoy - Dream Theater
Morgan Rose - Sevendust
Vinnie Paul - Pantera, Damagelan, Rebel Meets Rebel, Hellyeah
Matthew McDonough - MuDvAyNe
Neil Peart - Rush
Shannon Larkin - Godsmack
Danny Carey - Tool
Destroy Everything! Destroy Everything! Destroy Everything! Obliterate what makes us weak!
Igor Cavalera - Sepultura
