    Michael Shrieve of Santana.

An IQ that would class him as an idiot but a drumming genius.

and speed and skill are unrelated, but thats how some people measure how "best" a drummer is.
and by what to look for you mean, which track?
and by entire catalogue you mean showbiz, origin of symmetry, hullabaloo, and absolution, i am and do
and i agree bhar wasnt their best attempt, but it was better than most of the rubbish that gets released these days

    I think Phil Collins is the best-he is a real `machine' .

I used to be in love with the drummer from The Police...didn't notice if he could play very well or not but he was very Hot

Oh dear, another sad little post from the man who thinks sarcasm is wit.

Bought my first drum kit not even a month ago. Loving it, loving it. Just have to find a local place for lessons!

Do you mean Budgie, the drummer for Siouxsie and the Banshees, or Budgie the band in which case three different drummers (Ray Phillips, a name I can't remember and Steve Williams)...?

You people who never listen to jazz or latin music in its various guises are significantly narrowing your range of choices for "best drummer". There are whole worlds of music out there other than those broadcast on New Zealand commercial radio.

Size of drum kit or number of records sold is no vindication of musical virtuosity.

I wouldn't know about that, I don't much listen to local radio.

Was pleased to see Gene Krupa got a belated mention, likewise Jim Keltner.
So far don't see Ritchie Havens (Little Feat) get a mention...

    My favourites would be

    Simon Phillips
    Vinnie Colaiuta
    Dave Weckl
    Buddy Rich
    Steve Smith
    Steve Gadd
    Neil Peart
    Barriemore Barlow
    Ian Paice
    Jeff Porcaro
    Keith Moon
    Tony Royster
    Kenny Aronoff

The four top names would be my pick, but the rest are in no particular order!
