Aiming for legs is dangerous for anyone else that may be near by. If you miss the very small target, (a shin) then the round could go anywhere, potentially doing serious harm to an innocent party.
Anyone that has fired a hand gun could tell you that shooting a person in the leg is a ridiculas notion. Anyone that says they could do this with any accuracy or consistency is a complete bullshit artist.
The only option is to aim at the big bit.

As for hitting someones legs yes I know it is difficult as you need to take into account wind deflection, possible target location after a given instant of time, your reaction time and any possible kickback effect/movement....... but isn't that why you fellas go to school??

Having played with Browning 9mms, Glock 17s, and .38 Webley revolvers as my Wednesday afternoon PT when I worked for the Army, it took me 6 months of Wednesdays to get a 6 inch group at 12 metres with the Glock. The other two I'd be lucky to get half my allotted rounds on target. I started at 5m, 7m, 12m, and then 18m. I'm terrible with weapons, but handguns are great for shooting people at point blank range and not much else. If you aren't well trained and trying to shoot someone running toward you, a baseball bat or a rock is a much better option.

Standard issue firearms are Glocks and bolt action Remmington model 7's, (no scopes). They are getting new rifles soon however, which is a very good move.
By the way I am quite competant with a Glock, (won a prize for weapons training at cop college and have always scored perfect scores on requalification shoots) but would never consider for a moment trying to shoot an offender in the leg.
