Quasi, move to the west side of town.. That way yer not anywhere near fairfield, which is our own little Otara/South Central LA. Full of angry lil kids whos idols are their monkey mob and black power parents.

It's little out of control asshole homies that are one of the main reasons I almost never go drinking in town anymore (that and the smoking ban). I'm a big white guy with a shaved head and goatee, so i'm instantly a target for any of these little fucks that want a fight. When I was younger I was more than happy to take them up on that, but I'm 27 now and beating the crap out of little 18 year old wannabees is wearing thin, when all I wanna do is have a few drinks, listen to some sounds, and chat to my mates.

As for the racial aspect of it quasi, its just yet another part of our fucked up PC society.. If it was 30 white guys smashing a maori kid, there would be screams of outrage about this terrible hate crime, and a "anti racist" witchhunt of epic proportions, yet when its 30 maoris smashing over some white guy, its never a hate crime, its just "a crime", or more likely "an outpouring of the anger at being exploited by pakeha" or some such drivel.

I've decided they really need to make shooting homies legal. Like possum hunting, get a license, and go out and shoot some lil wannabe gangsters as a community service. Would sure as hell help make Hamilhole a nicer place to live in.

Well I thought about this thread a lot last night….

I think at some stage or other we have all been in Quasi’s situation where something is happening in front of us that is rapidly spiraling out of control and we suddenly realize that no matter how hard we have tried to live our own lives well… In some situations we are utterly powerless and that is what really hurts! Especially if you are aware of the possible implications when these unstructured event occur. A simple fall in a street fight can easily result in a death!

Another aspect that occurred to me is that we ALL have this demon lurking inside us. When motorcyclists gather in groups it can be very intimidating for some folks. If you are a part of the group, you can feel their ‘fear’ and it’s very easy to get a little giddy on it. Who here has not enjoyed tearing up the cagers while riding in a group? Oh the power, the sound, the glory…. Hmmmm! Even a hens night at a male strip revue has some ladies acting in a fashion that they would never consider when alone! We are I’m afraid, victims of our genes and a pack animal at heart! (something the military have exploited for some years)

The difference is that most of us are mature enough to control this dark side of our nature.

The problem is, that once we recognize this spiraling behavior in others we realize just how vulnerable we are to a group of ‘lesser’ people that are working as a group. Call it fear if you want to but (as that is what it is) but it’s a little more complicated that that!

But yes! I do believe that it is particularly bad in New Zealand. When we lived in Christchurch we just never went into town on Friday and Saturday evenings if we could possibly avoid it and it was as bad for the groups of 20 somethings as any other group!

But what is at the root of it all?

Yes, maybe the glorification of violence has some responsibility but more (I think) the removal of immediacy of consequences from our actions. If we get into trouble we squeal into our cellphone and visit A&E and it was someone elses fault etc etc. Bullshit! If you start a fight, even a simple pushing contest in a bar, there is a very high chance you will hurt someone. A wild drunken punch up can result in a murder or years of pain while the yobbo walks away. Etc etc (I’m sure you see where this is going)

It’s about time we all took this a little more seriously. Our sports stars cannot be allowed to get away with assault (like they have been) and the media needs to be very careful with the entertainment it provides and the news it reports. Violent acts are not self contained, the implications and ramifications echo through the years (example – we were burgled once and it took a year for one of the girls to sleep properly afterwards and we spend a lot on help for her!)

Where did this phrase, “I’ve paid my debt to society” come from? Society? Well actually your crime was against an individual mate and if they are still having problems you ain’t paid enough!

So… Good onya Brett, you have done a good thing and I admire you for taking some action! As for the rest of us? Can’t you see a discussion on shooting people in the legs is NOT helping?

    I dunno…

This shit depresses the hell out of me. The more I see of people the more I like my dog!

I feel for you Quasi. One of the main reasons I left the UK was due to the increase in street violence there, particularly by young, deluded, misguided, slime balls.

The fact that you were with your wife and kids must have been very disturbing. Not only due tot he fact that you didn't want them to witness this type of thuggery, but also because you would have felt a powerful urge to defend them from possible attack by these scum.

I lived in, what was officially, a city with the highest rate of violent crime in the UK. The sights I've witnessed are pretty horrific, and I was a court witness following one such attack which saw the primary offender sent down for 3 years.

As horrifying as these attacks can be it is important to put things into perspective; NZ remains one of the safest countries in the world to live in, despite what many of us here may have witnessed, and I agree with Paul, IMO the gangster rap culture is a particularly bad influence on the younger generation (shit, I sound like an old man now) as is the relaxation on the censorship of violent films depicting violence as 'normal'.

Yes you do sound like an old man. Are you saying there was no such thing as teen violence before the advent of T.V. or films?

I apologise for starting the shooting people in their legs debacle........ it was only meant to be an infomation gathering exercise not a provocative set of messages that glossed over the aftermath that such events create.

I hope that the boy manages to recover well and return to his daily schedules.

    I agreed 100%. It's not good enough.

My take on it is that public are not ALLOWED to intervene anymore - we get done for assault etc etc etc. This means we need to wait for the police who (lets face it) can't be every where all the time.

Not knowing the area I can't comment on the cops avoiding that part of town - but I'll take your word on it.

Surely as a concerned citizen you could push for proceedings against the pack of dogs. I'd argue you have a legitimate concern for the safety of you and your famil as you frequent that part of town, and you also have a duty to stand to the defence of others similarly threatened.

Escalate it as high as you want - the Police Commissioner might get some time, or might get the hard word if (during election year) one of the opposition parties wanted to have a go about it in Parliament... this being election year.

Did you get a number plate and or description. Give it to Winnie the poo... he might even name a name on TV.

Dunno eh - I agree with the sentiment... the situation sucks. Wouldn't it be nice to spray the little buggers with mace and get the poor kid the hell out of there?

Oye!!! Leave my favourite Worthless Incompetent Neutered Jerk-off Arsehole alone will you. It's not his fault that he is a mentally retarded, incoherent, homosexual cripple........ he was born that way.

And doesn't he just add a bit of colour to the situation anyway.

You M are very much the bigger man. Please ignore the idiot.

Hey Quasi..... please don't call these people DOGS ....... maggots or germs is a better word..... Dogs are the nicest creatures.

I have great respect for your pro-active attitude and the fact that you are actually doing something about it as opposed to most of us.

It's a great effort, please keep it up.

Haha, fair enough, I can see why you brought his name in to it then...but now you know better...so it's all good.

Someone else mentioned the complete thuggery by some macho dickheads on the sportsfields of the world and how they need to be held accountable for what would be assault elsewhere. Such a thing is being looked at seriously in the UK after a whole lot of soccer fights, and in Aussie within the NRL I think. These such people are some of the fuckers who need to be held responsible for being poor role models to kids.
