Q-class? Just looked them up, they seem to be around 50 feet long, from the 1920s ...

Get in touch with Vince Burrell (races a charcoal coloured 850 MotoGuzzi) or FroggyFrenchman on KB. They collaborated and built a covered trailer that doubles as a sleeper etc. Maybe one of them can help with the design/costings. Or if you pay them enough, even build another for you?
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

You're right. I meant Optimist. Has a Q-like symbol on the sail.

It's compact, light and tows really well. Has separate front compartments for tyres etc, all lockable.

I am following with interest, as this may be something I have to look at in the very near future if I have to sell my ute.

Any chance of any photos of these trailers?

For the record Qkkid was in my bed, not the other way round

Price looks about on the money. Mine cost me around $7k, double axle, braked, rear tilt door, whole side hinges up as well with gas struts (recommend this as doubles as canopy roof for raining or hot days).

There must be cheaper ways to do it.

A second hand tandem trailer and some steel, and a WHOLE lot of fibre glass sounds like me.

I paid $4500 for an old 97 transit ambulance, takes two race bikes and could be modified to take three without a huge amount of travel.
good to travel in and sleep too.
Was gonna call it 'the shaggin waggin' but decided since it's not the 1970's anymore it can be called 'the fuck truck'

First point - no i dont want to build anyone a trailer. Just getting that out there...

Things to consider... Yes buying a large covered in trailer is an expencive excercise, but dont think that building one will be cheap. The cost of materials alone is huge. I have built a few for people in the past, and have found the following combination to give you the best bang for your buck. Vinces trailer cost about $5k with all materials at cost and no labour bills. From memory its about 3m long, 1.9m high and 1.9m wide.

    1. Dont start from scratch, buy a $1000 trailer with a deck the aproximate size you want your floor area to be. Make sure its rust free and the running gear is in good nick. You cant get your project to this point for under a grand easily when you start from scratch.

    2. Use furniture tube for the framing, (1.4 or 1.6mm wall) This stuff is way stronger than most people give it credit for and a lot chaeper than buying 3mm or 5mm wall tube. I tend to use a combination of 25x25 and 50x25. The trailer i built for Vince used about $600 of tube at supplier cost, so around a grand retail.

    3. I use allupanel to clad my trailers, its basically a plastic core with thin alluminuim on both sides, its very light, very strong and comes pre painted in car quality paint. Comanys like Axis Routed Solutions in Hastings will happily supply it to you already cut to every size and shape you are going to need. This stuff can be about $200 a sheet, cladding is one of your biggest costs.

    4. Dont go cheap on the finishing. Details like flush mounted led lights, flip down bunks/benches, flaps in the sides and quality tie points and hinges/hardware are what will make the difference to you when it comes time to re sell. An extra $1000 at this point could earn you $3000 at sell time.

Personally, i dont like big box trailers, i prefur something small and light that wont double my fuel bill. Would be nice to have somewhere dry to sleep though. For the money, i would buy a van to sleep in and tow my small trailer.
There is no dark side of the moon, really, as a matter of fact. Its all dark...

Also a lot cheaper if you're traveling between the North and South Islands

I just brought a enclosed go kart trailer to use for the bikes, got it for $2200 and it fits two gsxr 1000 or two motox bikes and all the gear that goes with them, it also has a side awning to set up and keep out of the sun (or rain at manfield), all i had to do to it was fit a couple of wheel chooks and some more tie down points.
