And now for something outrageously sensible...

    Boaties Urged to Help Themselves

“Coastguard officials and police are urging boaties to invest in a cheap form of insurance, a plastic bag, which may save their boat and their lives.
……………. Coastguard duty officer Mark Leevers said boaties should never go on the water without two forms of communications, including a very high frequency (VHF) radio and a cellphone as a back up.
Mr Leevers said putting a cellphone in a plastic bag with a resealable top, could be a livesaver."

OMG, are some people who go out on boats so thick that things like this actually have to be spelt out in the media?

Surely you've seen how well some think beyond the leading edge of their car bonnet...
Do you realise how many holes there could be if people would just take the time to take the dirt out of them?

OMG, are some people who ride bikes so thick that things like "it's not a race track" need to be on road side signs?

Kiwi attitude to safety is poor and combined with rating their skills higher than they actually are leads to what the media terms "tragedy". More often than not it's a very preventable fuck up.

My father in law used to have a 28 foot boat and found that when he was coming in on rough seas to be safe there would be 10 foot dingies going out over the waves to do a bit of fishing with about 5 guys in them. Pretty sad really.
    It goes on everywhere!

Not a bad thing, his message is sound....just sometimes the delivery rubs people up the wrong way, though I'm certain he'd make no apologies for that.

The trouble with attempting to make things idiot proof is that the number and quality of idiots is increasing daily.

'Your an idiot' - that pic is either great irony or very clever.

Yep! A number of boats sink every year because the plug was not replaced after draining the bilge

Heh, reminds me of watching my brother set out in his P-Class at his boat club meeting, and seeing the back sinking lower and lower, till eventually he had to be towed back in by one of the lifeboats.
Turns out it's generally a good idea to put the bungs back in before setting off.
