Nope, the pope performs the coronation of the "Roman" Emperor, who is supposed to be a successor to the actual Roman Emperor (in role).
Arguments and power struggles between the "official" church, represented by the Vicar of St Peter/pope and the "secular" protector of the church, represented by the supposed Roman Emperor led to the eventual assumption of the "Divine Right of Kings" and all the hassle that caused, e.g. Charles I and his appointment for a little off the top
