Angry Connect battery wrong way VFR 800fi 1998

In my sleepy state I put a freshly charged batery into my VFR this morning. There was a small spark as i just lightly touched the connectors. I relized my mistake then. That I touched the terminals in wrong direction

    Faaaaaaaaaarrkkkkkk.

Anyways the bike wont start. The bike engine does turn over.

Headlight does not come on, and Fuel Injection does not hum when ignition turned on.

Rest of electrics seem to be working fine, Dash ,etc

So.... What damage have I bloody done? I think I have just ruined my holidays

What do I start checking first ? , starting with fuses. Please let it be just a fuse.
Does the vfr800 have a protection circuit ?

After fuses what can i do ?

Check the main fuse next to the battery. If that's not blown, then I suggest you get onto the VFR forum.
    ... and that's what I think.

    Or summat.

    Or maybe not...

    Dunno really....

Thanks, I did not see that fuse. I was looking at ones in the fusebox all were fine. Yes the fuse 30A right in front of the battery casing in a white enclosure was blown.

I replaced that and the bike started, warmed up and seems to be running properly. All lights ,electrics seem to be working fine.

Is there anything better than that huge rush of adrenalin relief you get after realising you just got away with something that could have been a WHOLE lot worse??

    Yes sir,

After I had checked the fuses in the fusebox were ok, I got that sinking feeling. Putting down tools comming online was the best thing as I totally didnt think about there being a seperate fuse next to the battery case. Soon as I removed it and saw it blown that was kinda nice. 4$ fuse from local supecheap auto.

Just make sure your alternator is charging the battery, the diodes in the bridge rectifier do not like reverse polarity.

Ooooh you lucky bugger. As automotive electronics advances, there are more and more sub components of the modern bike/car that can be royally rooted by a few hundred amps of reverse polarity - and shit do they cost big bucks to replace! Gone are the days when the first you knew of a reversed battery was that the starter cranked the engine backwards....

Exceedingly likely that the RR is fine, those diodes are a lot stronger than the fuse.

However, 5 mins of your time and the attached chart will set your mind at ease - you should get through the first couple of steps and end up at the box that says "Charging system perfectly OK."
