    Merchant navy

Is anyone here in the merchant navy? Cause it's one of my options I'm looking at. I can find some sites on it, but nothing with direct contact info. Any help would be great thanks

the 'merchant navy' is the name given to ships on a country's registration, which are commanded by the navy in times of war. a govt. order would be needed to do this. there is no 'merchant navy' per se at the moment. you'd be better off in the navy than on commercial shipping, as the postings are a little more exciting, you'll get a trade, and it is still possible to get exchanges with the RN, RAN etc, onto an aircraft carrier even....

have you thought about an aircraft engineers career in the air force? there is a HUGE call for avionics engineers all over the world

Most of the major ocean freight lines have an officer cadet scheme. There's also a training school in Auckland. Applicants need to be both literate and numerate -- advanced navigation requires more than a bit of nouse and most ocean-going vessels these days have very sophisticated satellite navigation technology and computer systems.

But if you just want to swab decks and get tatoos from exotic locations, move to Malaysia and sign on as "crew" in a vessel that sails under a flag of convenience.

My brother got into the Deck Officer training for Maersk, but had to give up because his eyesight wasnt good enough. He wasnt too happy about that. Awesome opportunity for travel and some farking huge ships! The maersk Regina for example. Yikes. Pity they cant fit into auckand harbour. Would love to see one.

If you are thinking of a nautical career then you can't go past the Royal Navy. All the toys and training without the wank of being in the US miltary.

    I'm not a Kiwi citizen lol, I'm a Brit
I have considered going over there, but I do like it here and I do want to give this country (even if it is a PC hole atm) some service in return. I might go to the poms later on, we'll see.
