Wannabe bucketeer

Just got a RD50 stock standard, intending to bucket it. Pics attached. Can anyone tell me exactly what to strip off it for weight saving etc. What about bungs, tyres, flip-up footpegs, suitable expansion chambers. There's a wealth of info around but would be nice to get all requirements/desireables here in one place.

first job -go out and race it --simple really.
not being sarky here dude but just do the legal minimum get some sticky tyres and get out there.You'll work out the rest as ya go along.
As I've stated elsewhere youre gonna get huuge improvements in laptimes just by tightening the loose nut on top of the bike.

Take off everything that isn't needed to make it go, get good tyres(or not), come out and ride it. As per the RG50s these things can be tuned to a standstill, best to just take it out initially and ride it. Chances are you'll do OK just as it is (see the "standstill" comment).

From recollection these are one of the most evil handling 50s you can buy

I stripped everything. To use the kart track I have to fit fold up pegs and nylon EVERYTHING.
Here's a before pic attached. The oil is from my KLX (that's Skunk_Control's KLX behind the bucket to be).

What do ya reckon speedpro? I think Pickle is laughing already...

I concur. Having owned &/or raced RD50, MB50, RG50, A50, NSR50, TZR50 & Aprillia 50. The RD is by far the worst handling. Though never used the A50 in anger.

Don’t let that stop you, get some decent tires & go race.

Tyres....I'm thinking 80front 100back/? x17 - any suggestions?

Won't they be a REALLY tight fit? 18" rims?

You're right though, keep the tyres small and it'll go better. Problem is that the only REALLY REALLY good tyres are all wider 17" jobbys. You should try riding on the original rib front first though, just so you can truly appreciate how much progress has been made in tyre technology, and to give everyone a laugh.

I'm laughing just imagining the scene......currently has 2.50x17 front + back with plenty of width/height clearance hence thoughts of 80/100. perhaps better off staying with 2.50 front & 2.75 rear in say MT65 Pirelli ($$$$ tho)

Keep them small and get the best you are willing to pay for. No matter how fast the motor, if you can't get round the corners you're gonna be dicked in bucket racing.
