Time on my hands

Right so after all my enthusiasm and excitement of getting started and wanting to give Buckets a go in December I went and fractured my heel a few days before the non points round…. So no racing for me until July according to the doc…

In the mean time though I will be getting my act together and start to stockpile parts and hopefully a bike.

I was looking on Trademe cos I like the idea of an FXR, but all the ones for sale are around $1500 to $2000. I’m guessing they’re expensive because they are road registered etc.

I was thinking getting a frame and a Loncin engine or an engine from a wrecked FXR would be a much better/cheaper idea.

And yes I could buy a bike all set up and ready to go but to be honest I have all this time on my hands and I’d love to think it’s MY bike. Not something somebody else has set up if you know what I mean.

I keep an eye on the Bits for Buckets Sticky which helps as well.

So yea, any good ideas?

Buy this one its cheap for what it is and you will have a fast reliable ride.............

Then with all that spare time build a realy exciting 2-Stroke something, check page 200 of the ESE thread for how to get 23 rwhp from a GP125 or any of the other builders and Wobbly for ideas .........

Building your own is fun..........but way more expensive and time consuming than you can ever think possible.

Buy a standard FXR replace everything that can break, modify the basics like carb, pipe, wheels etc and you'll be out of pocket around $2500 plus you'll spend months getting it fully sorted to your likeing and be left wanting more power.
That said there are 2 good FXR's for sale right now Brens in the south at $1800ish (standard footpeg brackets, wheels and bars though) and Ricks in Auck (only makes 17hp

) for $2000ish both are ready to go racers and are good buys. If you want to add your own touch put a new number on them!

Yea I am under no illusions of how much it'll cost and how much time it will take. (Think the missus is though haha) Yea both of those FXR's I've seen are a real good buy.

Also one of the concerns I have is, if I get a two stroke, will I be out of my depth seeing as i only have limited mechanichal knowledge??

Probably, but learning starts somewhere ................. buy a running FXR and a cheap 2-Stroke toy.

Best of both worlds.

Welcome to my world. The 2 stroke originally cost $55 problem is the smokey things turn you into a liar and a cheat. Highlights of a recent conversation with wife - "Thats right dear all those engine parts, machining, chassis, etc have all been gifted to me, hasnt cost me a cent more than the $55 I payed for it, yes of course thats the truth why would I spend money on another bike when I have the FXR, no Im not hiding more parts in my Fathers shed" Guess I should tell the old man to lock the shed for when we visit.

You could always cheat a little and only turn up for the Saturday practices, after all they aren't a race
