Failed WOF on brake pads being worn

Hey guys,

I just took my bike to VTNZ for a WOF and the guy failed it on the brake pads being worn.

Brought it back home and took them off to have a look. To me they seem to be ok, yes they are a little low but still well within the limits of being servicable. I was quoted about $180 for a full set of new pads. 2 on front and 1 on back.

What do you guys think? are they ok?

Should I take the pads to the guy at VTNZ and show them to him?

From that somewhat useless pic they look near the end of their life. A pic showing them from the side so we could see how much 'meat' is left on them would actually help.

There is no choice or arguement.

Untill your pads are replaced ... no WOF and the bike isn't legal on the road.

trim the wear indicators deeper, then repaint them with black spray bomb paint. refit them and go back for a recheck.

or don't be a tightarse, and get new ones.

A pic from that angle is fucking useless.

Show us them from the side... if they are ok then it was probably the inspector in a bad day, take it back when he's not there and get it passed. VTNZ are nice easy passes most of the time but they cause a headache sometimes.

Put some shiney new one's in there. Better safe than sorry. He must have failed them for a reason.

Meh, nothing wrong with them - they look to have 1.5-2mm remaining judging from the pictures, although as other have subtley hinted at, a side view would be helpful. Considering they only come with about 6-7mm, that's plenty. You can still see the gassing grooves. They might need replacing befre the next WoF depending on the mileages you do so just keep an eye on them, as you should be anyway.

Generally speaking manufacturers minimum specs for brake pad thickness is 0.5mm.

Cautious or not ... any complaint made to the testing station, and it will be found the tester was within his rights ... if HE believed it was unsafe. It is HIS authority (read livelyhood) to issue WOF's at stake.

However ... the original poster is within HIS rights to make an official complaint to the testing station. ... GOOD LUCK

In the meantime ... the bike is on the computer as being unsafe to be on the road. Regardless if the WOF (old) label has not expired.

WOF labels only mean it was deemed to be safe on the day it was issued.

Side note ...As I recall ... testers do not need a licence for all the vehicles they test.

Um - prob the only course of address is to track down the minimum spec from Honda and measure the things? You can buy a cheap as chips plastic set of calipers from M10 or whatever

Pretty sure the lines are the wear markers.

Should be $45 per side up front and around the same on the rear. Don't get sold fully sintered or "HH" pads, you don't need race spec stoppers for the riding you do.
