    No, I have 2 Laurels. I fixed the oil consumption problem on the other one in the thread you mentioned.

    Ah, so what did the problem turn out to be?.. I took a quick look at the end of that thread, didn't seem like you'd made a post since fixing it.

    I did an oil change with some 20W60 diesel oil and I added a bottle of "stop smoke" to the engine and it no longer blows big clouds of white smoke. It doesn't burn anywhere near as much oil as it previously did.

    If an engine has a lot of blow by, then that means that oil from the sump is going past the piston rings and into the cylinders. Using thick oil reduces the amount of oil that gets past the small gaps between the rings and the bores.

    Using oil that's too thick isn't that good for the engine, but it'll have to do until I can afford another engine for it. It's a good trick to keep in mind if you have an old car with a tired engine. I don't think the same trick works on bikes because then you have the gearbox and clutch to think about.
