Cool idea having a supermarket.
We used to get fruit and bakery stuff from the local coolstores and bakeries when I was a youngin.
Having it all in one place makes it quite convenient.

I wonder what the conditions of entry are, because I'm sure there are a lot of people that will go there when they have money than leaving it for the people that really need it.

It's better to not pass and know that you could have than to pass and find out that you can't. Wait for the straight.
If it's the one I'm thinking of it doesn't exist, it was only a temp store as part of a art thing?
"Kim Patons Free Store art project that was established for two-weeks in June, 2010"
But it seems we might have got a new 1 that took over from it

if it was like the temp Welly one there are no conditions, you just have to show all that you take. It was based round, well like ACC 'social responsibility' a lot of people went in to "clear out the place" as it was all free but generally only ended up taking a couple of things either through guilt, shyness, not wanting to be seen as greedy etc.
but this is from the welly one's friendface page
The Free Store, Wellington
Thanks Sara! This is something that we have been wrestling with for quite a while now. We are currently working through regulations and contingency plans for the event(s) of gross abuse - and mistreatment - of The Free Store. We haven't solidified any such regulations, we are brainstorming furiously though![]()
The most effective regulation that we have come up with thus far is a maximum item retention per customer, per visit. If there continues to be persistent abuse by a certain individual, we will have more developed policies for such cases.
At the end of the day, if someone takes all the food at once, it means that others will not have immediate access to that food - and we simply won't allow others' right-to-access to be removed by selfish individuals. This project is for the good of the wider Wellington community - not simply for a few individuals who will seek to take advantage of it.
Can you, or anyone else, think of any regulations that we can bring to the brainstorming table? Thanks for the comment!!!![]()

Great idea but hopefully they've got systems to prevent abuse. It's always a bit sad to hear things like people going to these places and getting HEAPS of free stuff and then listing them on trademe etc. Food is probably a bit harder to sell there but the concept is still there.
With damaged packaging, what culpability does the supermarket have if there's a food poisoning incident?
tis a shame that it'll get fucked over by those that, if they had money, would continue fucking people over and dodging taxes like it's a national sport... i'd rather those cunts stayed broke and lived from places like this than took positions of power and/or responsibility... but as long as they've worked for it![]()

Hang on, I thought every supermarket was free? (just don't get caught!)

I do like going to the clearance shop though in Norman Baker Dr (I think it is) in Wiri - great prices for items which are close to their best before date or surplus stock. Always heaps of stuff there.
I'm waiting for the free bank.
Those who recognise they have too much just dump off their surplus and those with nothing go in to pick up enough to pay their rent/medical/food bills.
Oh what a perfect world that would be![]()
