What Is the Best Free Program To Convert Audio CD To MP3

I have a whole lot of CD music stored on my PC that I want to change to MP3 as it takes less space (also want to be able to transfer it to a MP3 player if I ever get one). What programme do you guy recommend to convert Audio CD to MP3. I also have a DVD burner so if this programme is can be use for DVD Music that would be cool as well (would love to put my AC/DC Family Jewels DVD as audio only into my playing list as well).

I use Acoustica WAV-MP3-WAV - had it for ages but I think I had to pay for it after the 'trial period' was up.
Video to WAV extract is ok but free version only does 3mins (unlimited times tho)

cdex does a nice job for cd-->mp3 or wav-->mp3 and is free http://cdexos.sf.net
iTunes is always a winner esp. if that MP3 player is an ipod.
if you want to extract dvd audio, I'm guessing virtualdub would do the job, altho' I've never done it myself (well not really)
virtualdub can extract audio from a dvd movie, so I guessing it will extract dvd-audio as well

iTunes is free and you don't need an iPod if you just want to organise and convert all your music on your PC/Mac. Just download it from the itunes website

I was using Creative Jukebox to rip songs from an audio CD, and a file that should have only been 3 mg blew out to 9 mg, I couldn't be fagged playing around with the settings, so am now just using windows media player, it keeps the files size down, and it also allows you to edit the song title.

but will "i tunes" convert from "aac" to "mp3" i have i-tunes and an i-pod and now have an mp3 player in my car but cannot play i-tunes files on my car stereo??? am i just doing something wrong???????

iTunes can convert aac to mp3. Select the track in iTunes, make sure your prefs are set to the mp3 settings you want, then under the advanced tab, choose 'Convert selection to MP3' or so it should say. If your settings are aac, then it'll say 'Convert selection to AAC'.

But iTunes isn't great at converting to MP3 (there, I said it. Something Apple isn't so good at). If you want a decent conversion of AAC to MP3, then use an app called Lame Encoder. Download this, read the instructions (quite easy), and have that convert your selection to MP3.

This for Mac OSX, I don't know of any PC versions tho, cos I don't use a PC. A quick check on VersionTracker doesn't show anything obvious.
Worst case, if iTunes does a terrible job at one or two, don't throw away the AAC version. Just burning it as an audio cd on a CD-RW (saves wasting a cd then), and reimport it using MP3 settings. Or, dig out the original CD it came from and reimport that

ok i have got an album on my i-tunes from a cd i have ,, go into prefs and select burning on mp3 and click on "burn" and it says cant do it! it seems to only burn to mp3 tracks that were originally mp3 ,,,,

Have Windows Media Player 10, but don't have any luck find out how I can get it to convert Music CD files to MP3. Does it do this? If it does How? Just call me an old PC incompedant fart, but I need some help here. If it does not then I need to download a convertor.
