Computer geeks who play driving games are more likely to crash on a real-life road, a study says.

It found that motorists who play games such as Need for Speed and Gran Turismo are also 44 per cent more likely to take risks on the roads such as running a red light, and are less successful at carrying out everyday manoeuvres.

What about GTA?

I just watched a Top Gear where Clarkson first did Laguna Seca in a Honda NSX on GT and then in real life. He basically concluded the experiences had very little in common. People who think their awesome driving skills in a game translate to the real world are deluded. They probably also think if you crash in real life, you can just start over

Why stop at driving games ... war games/shooting games have similar effects in the minds of some ...

Games do affect driving. I had my own experience of this about 30 years ago. I had been playing my semi-regular session of 'Space Invaders' at a shop for about half an hour. I played a lot and after a while you get into a rhythm sweeping left and right, taking out the baddies. After my session finished I hopped on the bike and headed home without really focusing on the job at hand. After a few blocks I woke up and realised I'd been sweeping left and right between the cars in the two lanes going my way in exactly the same way as I had on my game. It was a real wake up call to concentrate when I hop on the bike.

Yep I'm a self confessed gamer, wasted squillions of hours on games of all types. When I started racing motorcyles, all those hours spent gaming was of no benefit at all on a real racetrack. I may have known a few more things but nothing the uninformed couldn't pick up in 2 secs.

Before joining the Army I also spent an unhealthy amount of time playing FPS games (war/shooters like Quake,Counter-Strike, Battlefield etc) and kicked ass. This false sense of grandeur was also worthless preparation for the real thing.
