Not here; PC. Apple will cost more and then there is the software availability if you know what I mean!

    Misinformation...

Intial costs: from about $800 if you buy new though to $5-6000.

Software: latest games are slighty limited, but there is software to do everything; though it may not be what you were using on the PC. Don't forget they are complete with the OS, DVD authoring, Music and Photo software etc.

When did you have a go? Just looking to surf and email?

my bro just bought an iBook from Trademe for $500 and works fine. I've just finished installing the OS on it etc, and there's nothing wrong with it.

As for the games etc, they are a touch more limited, but there are hundreds of games out there. These demos etc just for a start.

And then if there's any PC only software you *have* to use, then you can buy Virtual PC. Altho this excludes most PC games, cos the games rely on hardware in your PCm where as VPC is only emulating a PC, so it doesn't work the same. But software runs fine. There are also plenty of mac versions of programs, like Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc if you have to use those stuff, plus heaps more better stuff, like iPhoto (for digital pics management), iMovie (for editing home vids), GarageBand (for makin music) etc etc all free..

then there's how fast they are, and the lack of viruses and spyware on Macs too.. Can't see how the world isn't more onto macs..

    btw, welcome TA

    MACs Rock!!!
But I don’t own one at the moment as I’ve recently built a PC. Wish I hadn't. But I do use a Mac in work for some applications.

I'm a big Mac fan, and as soon as I can really justify it I'm getting another.

As for finding them a bit fiddly, after a little use you’ll find that they’re far more user friendly than Windoze based operating systems. But they are slightly different, so you probably just found it a little awkward getting used to it.

Go for it - you wont regret it.

[SNIDE]I could get three great Macs for $5000 too!

I could buy one PC for $5000.
    Therefore PC's are expensive?[/SNIDE]

For your dollar spent Mac's and PC's are about the same cost/power/software. You can spend more, you can spend less. Cheap PC's have video on the mainboard, Mac's have a separate video card which *generally* makes the video faster - AT THAT DOLLAR VALUE. And on it goes.

It's like saying Mazdas are cheaper than Ferraris. There is no comparing them like that.

Macs are pretty good with interchangeability nowdays with PC parts. PCI/AGP modems, sound/video cards etc are mostly interchangeable, totally dependant on whether the Mac has built in support for the hardware or if the company that makes the hardware has Mac drivers. Buying from the big name brands usually means both Mac and PC support.

I just got the latest model G5 Mac (dual 2.3ghtz 64bit proc's, dual channel RAM etc etc, all the fancy latest technologies) for $4500. This is for professional output so I probably would not recommend one for home pron surfing Oh BTW OSX Tiger is the shizzle man!!!! (Just announced as the best selling Mac OS of all time!)

Netguide recently had the G4 iBook (12") as the best buy laptop for under $2500, and the Mac mini retails for a little less than $1000 and specs out the same as a PC up to about a $1600 Dell (Although the Mac mini comes minus a monitor, bonus really if you already have one).

The misconception that Macs are more expensive is a myth from the past nowdays. I recently read an article in a PC mag where they built a PC from scratch using the same brand/model of components that Mac was using and the PC ended up costing $15 less than the Mac. Macs are generally high-end puters for professionals, but in the last 5 or so years they have secured themselves into the 'affordable' range with the rise of the iMac and now the mini...

For the needs you listed you would not have to do anything other than plug it in, Macs come preloaded with all but professional level software.

Support the cool little guys man!!

Dion (the resident Mac-head.... and proud!)
