I don't have kids but the people I know who do are fucking stressed, they're scared shitless while still trying to take care of their children who are pretty much traumatised by the whole ordeal. As time goes on the aftershocks get more and more stressfull for everyone, the news really doesn't do it justice there is a huge amount of tension in chch atm, even if people are safe they're scared fucking shitless.
Just an "out there" kind of idea. No doubt it is a completely impractical idea but I got thinking....

There must be a load of us willing to open our homes up to these families to give them a break away from what seems like a constant emotional and mental drain. I for one am but realise the expense would not be practical.

I am also quessing that despite the trauma few would want to leave town or their homes....but maybe a plea to Air NZ to get some people out for a few days?

That wee trembler & the likes are getting truely lodged in the nuisence catagory now.
Seeing the reaction of the others at work this morning was interesting though, really shows the effect on peoples wellbeing now, there's definately some frayed nerves out there & understandbly so
Driving home from town I came up Telegraph Rd and crossed the fault line and it's rather the road has been shifted completely one lane across, almost defies belief when only a few days ago it was gun barrel straight. And seeing the next property along the road looking like it's been blown apart
So over the aftershocks, lost it this morning after the big one...

At Burwood we have canceled elective surgery and are doing acute overflow surgery from CPH & deploying staff to Princess Margaret Hospital where a significant number of elderly rest home patients have been moved

Trevor Pierce picked up Ducati today,Swann assessor will check it soon

Best news today-after 4 & 1/2 days my old cat Marco came home, skinny, dusty and tired but OK!

We are all stuck where we are really, you can't just leave your home behind and suddenly feel safe.. Most people at work wanted to leave today after that first quake but only one person left, and he had already had major home damage in the first one. The reality is that your bills are always there and you just have to keep on working no matter what happens just to put a roof over your head, even in an emergency. Leaving town is not an option for almost everyone.

Yay for the cat Bummer about the house.

I'm kind of over work for this week already, maybe because I was out there at 8am on Saturday morning wondering what was happening at home the whole time, makes all the other jobs I should be doing this week seem a bit insignificant.

Rode the bike to work today though, very therapeutic. Weather for tomorrow looks a bit crap though, my piles of silt that were drying out will turn back into mud

Thats great news. Our cat freaks the fuck right out at every aftershock. He has finally calmed down. As has SWMBO who is asleep in the comfy chair with cat on lap. And a right gory episode of True Blood on.... Thats therapeutic I reckon so I've left them to it.

that stress response is a kicker though: SWMBO has been really on edge, as have I. But I expect the worst in every situation so when an aftershock comes its like "Is that all you've got, asshole?" Stupid I know

    A very good idea indeed.

We have a spare room with a double bed and a an inflatable air mattress. Anyone who wishes to have a break away until the after shocks settle down would be welcome.

mumble grumble woken up with earquake dreams then trying to go back to sleep another one shakes the bed. It's only listed as a 3.7 but it's also only 6km down and near the tunnel again.
Yep i'm all jumpy with most of them now too.

EJK, how about you put your considerable skills into making MD's idea happen?

One of our customers in Amberley said yesterday that the roads had been pretty busy with folks heading North, I guess if your house has been destroyed alot are heading up to stay with relatives etc?

Friend of mine in Hanmer runs Holiday homes, she inundated with people coming up to escape, many who have lost their homes, have only the clothes they walk in. It sure is an eyeopener for our whole country.

HOT, so glad you've got your Marco back. You are a pair of survivors!

It must be so unnerving with all the aftershocks. You may know in your head that all should be well, but that doesn't stop the adreneline and your heart racing.

Yesterday a man from the earthquake commission, said that people should realise that structures and buildings that survived the initial quake undamaged should be more than able to handle any aftershocks without failing. I pass this on in the hope that it may help reassure some of you suffering all these shakes.

I was happy that our house was not going to fall down, but it took the engineer from the council having a look around to convince the mrs that it was safe. Better than our friends down the road a bit who are now living in a caravan in their driveway. Now all we need is a working sewer system back and life can carry on until someone can get to our place and give us a verdict on how fixable it is.

More importantly, I finally got a decent nights sleep last night. Didn't notice anything, but more importantly mrs didn't notice anything so she wasn't waking me up to ask me if I felt the last aftershock

Believe me D, I witnessed the fear in my 4yr old daughters eyes every time the ground shook, and it wasn't me or any other adult installing fear into her, that was solely down to the earth shaking the house around. Kids are not stupid, they know when to be scared.
