How is the large pile of silt behind my house supposed to dry up and blow away by itself when it keeps getting rained on I really don't want shovel it all up because I'll end up shovelling up my lime chip path with it as well, it looks nice but it's an arse to get silt out of.
i was round at my uncles shovelling the silt into wheel barrows then putting them on the side of the road, the council went around picking it up on one of the days i was there, now the rest of it is just sitting there. hopefully someone will go collect it soon. i spent hours moving that crap, not fun at all. i suggest hot wiring a bobcat

Also had my temporary water main repairs made permanent yesterday by the plumber I arranged. Have still heard nothing from the council RE the break I reported to them - as far as they know I still have no water!

You did well getting an indication of time from EQC,up till today my house wasn't weather tight and I had no joy with my phone calls to them!

Rather ironic that CCC sent an inspector to me today to check/sign off my new logburner that was installed day before quake!

They may of course decide repair is not cost effective.
Dunno if it'd work, but would be worth checking if anyone does it... what about laparascopic (keyhole fibre optic) inspection - like they do with the drains, but the shorter ones they use by hand to inspect cylinders with the head still on (thru the plug hole)...? Guessing that could be done thru a pluggable hole in the cladding and would show up gaps/shearing/splintering as well as if the boards were off.

Anyway, an idea, maybe. Hope you get something definite fast, too.

Something that those of us with kids, or in a need of a respite

A FREE concert, just for us Cantabrians, is coming to Christchurch on October 23rd!
The massive line up contains a strong Christchurch contingent including...
    - Anika Moa
    - Opshop
    - The Feelers
    - Dane Rumble
    - J Williams
    - Dave Dobbyn
    - The Exponents

    WHEN: October 23rd from 12 noon until 10pm, televised live from 6pm - 8pm.
    WHERE: North Hagley Park, Christchurch
    HOW MUCH: FREE FREE FREE!

Jason Kerrison, OpShop frontman, explains "It's been overwhelming how many people have wanted to become involved in this project. Since I've been home I've really noticed how shook up people are by the earthquake," Kerrison said.

"You don't realise how much when you're not here on the ground. I hope this concert will be a chance for the people of Christchurch to both let off some steam and know that the rest of the country is behind them 100 percent."

A good thing for you to take the kids too, or just to have a change in a happier enviroment!

An interesting idea - I'd imagine this would work in a lot of buildings and will probably be used on hollow stone constructions. The original side of the house where most visible damage is - and we suspect hidden structural damage - is weatherboard with internal lath & plaster. The kicker is that the spaces appear to be packed with local clay....presumably a crude form of insulation.
I'm assuming now that if assessors say - fixable - then the weatherboards will have to come off the bulged front wall as a minimum.
EQC say their priorities for assessors are firstly non weathertight buildings - around 2000 they say - then the structurally suspect. Around the same number of them too.
All we can do is wait philosophicaly - but try & tell my wife that.....
If aftershocks keep extending the cracks as they are doing it's going to be a moot point anyway.

what point is removing weather boards?
A weather board house is the best construction IMHO, if a lintel has moved so will aa weather board, and this is highly unlikely.

Who'd have thought that lying in bed would end up being more dangerous than motorcycle racing ?
Hope this 'arthroscopy' doesnt lay you up for too long , what ever that involves , the word sounds painful enough for me

When I had mine done I was back on the Sidecar in about 3-4 weeks so it depends on when you get it done, you could always put it off until after Greymouth

Only felt one here today and that was the 4.5 at 10am

Didn't know about the clay, had thought about batts afterwards, but hell, just trying to give some hope/options...

And re telling your wife and the waiting, all I can think of is take really good care of each other - you know each other best! - and when you're really in it just say "F**k it!" and try to get away. Things aren't going to go as fast as anyone hopes - blame aftershocks, bureaucracy, materials/labour shortages, whatever - so everyone is going to need their blow-off strategies for the next few months for the hard slog until things get more settled and positive.

Sorry, here endeth the lesson. Take care, good luck...

I'm living over near the Uni, our apartment got away just fine. Not sure about my flatmate though, poor girl was terrified - went back to her parents' in Nelson for a week to relax.

I myself missed the big'un (and was gutted) but the aftershocks I've all enjoyed.

Hey her name is not Sophie is it? My friend's daughter came home as it's been doing her poor head in. Stay sane down there, it must be a little hard.

Nup, not a Sophie - but she's still pissed I keep teasing her about being scared of the aftershocks. I think all my time spent around bikers has left me a veteran to natural and not-so-natural disasters, haha.
