Careful viewers will notice in the previous images signs attached to the shops or fences "XX Open for business' . There were a lot of building post Sept, Boxing day that had some damage or the building next to them was damaged and there was temporary wire fencing blocking off footpaths around them. All those shitters have fallen down now and many caused injury and deaths.
I could not work out why they were not pushing them down. Many due to Insurance, Landlords, Council, Historic Places ....
Bowl the lot now I say including the cathedral. Build again and make it special.
I have to agree. We need to let go of the past and use this as a chance to start from scratch and build the world's most advanced city.
Cathedrals and churches are kind of redundent these days, why spend a fortune maintaining symbols of superstition and outdated philosophies.
Don't blame me, I voted Green.

Yes and no... some of the red stickered buildings were empty and this did save lives, however as I said I have been involved with several of those buildings, like the thai pong were the engineer said its safe, lucky the wall fell out not in and the roof stayed up...
Stanmore rd shops were empty but like the butcher some moved round the corner (same buildings same age same construction) and it all fell down and in the fish shop 2 died, how the fuk more didnt Im buggered if I know.
A big piss off to me is the day cear next to the shops, I had said to the owner that chimny needs to come down, it wasent removed and on the 22 it fell through the roof taking out a lard n plaster ceiling (hundreds of little dagers) into the room that a dozen under 5's sleep in at that time of the day... yet for some reason that day all children survived (unsure how many were in there as I have not seen the owner just the mess)
The house with the bay windows, previous red, lucky as there but the house with no frount on it I saw the guy climing out a window with his dog (darft when all he needed to do was walk out the frount and onto the road)
I cleaned up the church on the palms corner, they wanted to use it and still are... IMO thats bad next decent shake and it will fall IN, I say in cos its built a little different a single vineer on the inside rather than outside and its bearly holding up... owners reckon they be fine.
As for the cathedral, let it live but rebuild the tower from compersits to look the same, shit if cooplands water falls can look real Im sure they can do the same with old stone.

Again, yes and no. Is fake heritage worth having ? Ironic question as I build classic & post classic race bikes.....but I don't know the answer.
The engineers who passed these buildings after the first quake were playing the percentage game...no immediate damger of falling down if we didn't get another big one.
the problem with this is that most of the engineers weren't sitting on the fault line in Sept... and ChCh was far enough away from the first epicenter to give a false sense of safety - shit we've survived a 7.2, we'll be ok now....Most of ChCh knows now what it felt like to be on the end of the fault line in Sept....and the country residents are just nodding wisely - we've been there, picked all that shit up and carried on living in munted houses.
I hope they rebuild the Cathedral. ChCh is just not ChCh without in IMHO (and I'm not religious). The worst thing they could do is replace it with a Church built with a "Modern Architecture" design.

Ageed, I hate watching the 'blame game' unfold as the dust starts to settle.
Its understandable for someone who has lost a loved one to look for answers and perhaps point the finger but that wont bring them back. Had buildings been condemed after Sept 4th last year, those affected would have had something to say. Millions of dollars are pouring into Christchurch, thousands of people are digging in and clearing up, the rest of NZ are doing thier best to raise cash however they can. NZ is here for you Christchurch and will be for some time yet.
I disagree.

I think the Coventry Cathedral example is perhaps more relevant to Chur chur than FLW's work, but he is my favourite architect, and he built some stunning churches (the Synagogue is amazing).
The good thing about the Anglican Cathedral is that a lot of it is still standing, thanks perhaps to EQ strengthening work carried out a few years ago. The fucked parts, principally the watchtower part should, in my view, be demolished, and something new, that looks new (not a steel frame clad in old stone the same shape as the old spire) built to replace it. That would be a good place to put the memorial to the people who died, too.
I dont know what Brownlee is referring to when he talks about demolition of the heritage buildings: presumably they will want to keep the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals (he would particularly want to keep that one, I'd suggest), the Provincial chambers and the arts centre.
but low-rise, old commercial? bin it.

Ha, I used that as an argument against "modern" rebuilding of Chch cathedral the other day...then I was reminded about the Left-footers' place in Liverpool (Paddy's Wigwam) and I'm back on the fence again.
