Well I finally got motivated enough to undo the shelving I put in a few years ago to expose then manhole so I could go under the house and inspect my piles. Sorry, the piles under my house. Not a lot of fun with a crawlspace of about 80 or 90 cm and in close to complete darkness. Bloody hard to manouevre and use the torch to see what I wanted to see. Then I had the bright idea of grabbing my rather good camera and sitting in one spot taking photos eventually covering 360 degrees. Turns out the range of the flash covered the whole underfloor and the autofocus worked a treat giving me a way better look than I could have got without spending a very uncomfortable half hour or so under there. Just a matter of hoping out then and downloading the photos on the PC where a quick review showed that all piles are still doing their job with no sign of damage. Bloody relief that!
I think that that just leaves me with superficial damage to attend to. (Cracks where ceiling and wall panels have separated slightly.) I have a few cracks in the mortar between the concrete block cladding of the house but I guess there's not much to be done about that but seal them up.
Grow older but never grow up
No one for EQC my way yet. But MrsB did have a nice chat to a helpful person on the phone last week who ensured her we are on a list. Mind you pointless fixing anything with the amount of wobbles still going on.
I called the council today regarding the stream running through my property that is now narrower than it was (plus the land appears to be lower around it) - most likely going to cause flooding issues in the future. She was concerned I'd not called earlier and apparently someone will be around in the next 2 days to have a look. Should be interesting.
That one kicked arse![]()
It was awesome eh, very intense. I started steadying shit in the house, it went on so long and built in intensity I considered getting out. Then not long after I heard another coming, but while that was closer and shallower, it was on a 3.7 compared to the earlier 5.
i take it you guys know how to pinpoint exactly where each one hits on the surface?
the big one was a 5.0, it was on the old tai tapu road, so it might have just got more shagged.
if you want to see where it hit then enter this:
43.63°S, 172.56°E
into google maps.

.....just raced home 10k to check that the water cylinder was still hanging in after that one....first time ive had enough concern to do that for a while....still only as fucked as it was a month ago....
I have to say, it definitely felt stronger than a 5.
...and they are calling it an aftershock?
Its another earthquake really innit?
Until the activity settles to the pre 7.1 levels, they're all aftershocks. Of course, if we get a 7.2+, they'll all be reclassified as foreshocks.
Was at 2nd floor of CPIT building at that time. I wonder how people felt it at 6th floor!
Yeepee kai yay!
If you can make it on Kiwibiker you can make it anywhere.
